Box Score CHESTER (PA) –
Carlie Baldus scored with 10:13 remaining to lift the Delaware Valley University field hockey team to a 2-1, non-conference victory at Widener University on Wednesday evening.
DelVal improved to 3-5 on the season and will now prepare for its first Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom game as the Aggies host Manhattanville College on Friday, September 23 (7 p.m.). Widener dropped to 3-3 with the setback.
With the game tied at 1-1, DelVal was awarded a penalty corner.
Stefania Swider began the corner and the ball eventually found its way to Baldus. Her first shot was blocked in front, but she able to put the rebound past Pride goalkeeper Mikayla Ninos. It was the fifth goal of the year for the junior and 2015 all-MAC Freedom honoree.
Widener came right back and the pressure on with three straight corner opportunities. The Pride got three shots off during that time and Aggie goalkeeper
Rosie Bishop came up with two big saves while the other attempt was blocked in front. DelVal got the ball down to the other end for the final two minutes and came away with the road win.
Swider picked up the lone goal of the first half, her second of the year, off an assist from fellow senior and team captain
Cecelia Lounsberry. The tally came with 10:22 left in the stanza. Widener tied the contest 15-plus minutes into the second half with a Sam Scoma tally. It stayed that way until Baldus' heroics.
DelVal held a slim, 12-10 margin in shots while the Pride had a 14-7 advantage in corners. Bishop was credited with those two second-half saves and the win while Ninos had three stops.
