Box Score IMMACULATA (PA) – The Delaware Valley University men's lacrosse team evened its record on the season and it jumped out to a 9-4 lead and held on for a 9-8, non-conference win at Immaculata University.
DelVal improved to 1-1 on the year and the squad will next take a trip to Winchester, Virginia to battle Shenandoah University on Wednesday, March 9.
The Aggies struck first as freshman
PJ Rafferty began a big afternoon with an unassisted tally just 67 seconds in. Immaculata (0-4) tied it up two minutes later, but Rafferty set up junior
Alex Manderack for a goal and sophomore
Nick Shendge followed with a tally of his own for a 3-1 DelVal lead after the first quarter.
The Mighty Macs tied the game with a pair of goals in the first 93 seconds of the second. Back came the Aggies with three straight goals. Rafferty connected for back-to-back tallies to complete a hat trick and Shendge added his second goal of the game. Immaculata's Mike Reardon scored later in the half as DelVal took a 6-4 lead into the break.
The third quarter was all Aggies as they held a 9-2 advantage in shots and found the back of the net three times in those 15 minutes. Freshman
Austin Sensenig opened the scoring in the quarter and fellow rookie
Jordan Smith followed six minutes later. Rafferty got his fourth and final goal of the day with 35 seconds remaining in the quarter.
The Mighty Macs gave DelVal a scare as they struck four times in the fourth, the last coming on a Christian Fisher goal with 47 seconds left. However,
Matt Tordone won the crucial faceoff after Fisher's tally and the Aggies were able to run the clock out for the win.
Tordone dominated the faceoff circle all afternoon as the freshman won 14 of 19 draws. Tordone also had seven ground balls as DelVal had a 24-17 advantage in that category.
Rafferty finished with four goals and one assist for a five-point afternoon. Shendge had two tallies while Sensenig ended with one goal and two helpers for three points. Sophomore
Danny Smith added seven ground balls and four caused turnovers on the defensive end. Senior goalkeeper
Jon Fogarty notched his first collegiate win as he recorded 10 saves, including four critical stops in the fourth quarter when Immaculata put the heat on in its comeback attempt.
Fisher and Brian Shultis had two goals apiece for the Mighty Macs with Shultis also adding two assist. Jake Kemble had four ground balls and Christian Custodio stopped 10 shots in net.
