Seth Clauser and
Chris Coyle each scored four times to lead the Delaware Valley College men's lacrosse team to an 11-9 victory over visiting Arcadia University.
For the Aggies, it was their second win of their inaugural week as they improved to 2-0 on the year. They will look to remain perfect when they travel to Elizabethtown College for the first road challenge of the season on Wednesday, March 11. Meanwhile, the Knights dropped to 1-3 overall.
Delaware Valley opened up a 3-0 lead just 10 minutes into the game as Coyle got the first goal and
Bill Long and
Matt Brady followed with tallies of their own.
Riley Kratzke set up both Coyle and Brady's goals with pin-point passes,
Arcadia finally got on the board with 4:23 to play in the first quarter when Danny Riley set up Ryan Donovan to cut the deficit to two. However, the Aggies came right back with Clauser picking up his first of the day to put his team back up by three, 4-1, at the end of the first quarter.
The Knights got an early tally in the second from Sean McDonald before the duo of Coyle and Kratzke went back to work. Kratzke set up Coyle twice in exactly two minutes, once on a man-up situation, to give the Aggies their largest lead of the day at 6-2 with 10:44 remaining in the first half.
Arcadia came storming back, scoring five of the game's next six goals before the second quarter clock expired. Riley had two goals and one assist for the Knights in that span and the two teams went to the locker room knotted at 7-7. Delaware Valley tally in the spurt came from Clauser off a
Pat Davis assist.
Delaware Valley finally broke the tie 9:24 into the third quarter when Coyle earned his fourth of the afternoon. However, the lead was short lived as McDonald found Matt Mignogna in front of the cage to tie the game again at 8-8 and it stayed deadlocked heading into the fourth.
In the final stanza, Clauser broke the tie and put the Aggies back up by one with 11:05 to play in regulation. Then, with 9:43 left on the clock, he got his fourth of the game off a pass from
Alex McKenzie for what proved to be the game winner. Arcadia did not go quietly as it got back to within one when Riley scored his third of the day with 6:34 to go. However, Delaware Valley added an insurance goal from Long just 55 seconds later to ensure the 11-9 victory.
Clauser, Coyle and Kratzke all had four points in the win for Delaware Valley with Kratzke's all coming from assists. Long had two goals on five shots and Brady added a tally of his own.
Danny Smith was stellar on defense for the second straight game as he led the squad with seven ground balls and six caused turnovers.
Jacob Tomasik played all 60 minutes between the pipes and made 12 saves.
The Knights had five different goal scorers, led by three from Riley and two each from Donovan and McDonald. Riley also added two helpers to lead the team with five points. Billy Van Dyke was dominant on faceoffs as he won 18 of 22 draws and was credited with a game-high 10 ground balls. Jordan Culichia took the loss in goal for Arcadia as he entered the game at the start of the second half. He made seven saves while A.J. Beck started the game and made five saves in 30 minutes of play.
