Box Score PURCHASE (NY) – The Delaware Valley University field hockey team earned its first conference victory of the season with a 4-3 decision at Manhattanville College on Saturday.
The Aggies got back to the .500 mark overall (5-5) and in the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (1-1). The win also snapped DelVal's two-game losing streak. The Valiants dropped to 5-7, 0-2 in the conference.
Sophomore
Carlie Baldus got the Aggies on the board with 19:13 remaining in the first half. She sent a shot through traffic after weaving her way to the middle of the arc. Freshman
Timera Brooks-Watts gave DelVal a two-goal lead with 10:52 on the clock. She tapped in a cross from senior
Taylor Prichett. The 2-0 advantage was short-lived however, as Manhattanville senior Morgan Parsons converted a penalty stroke just 1:36 later. The Valiants evened the score with 51 seconds left when freshman Nicole Fanelle tipped in a pass from junior Bregje Smits.
Just when it looked like the game would be deadlocked heading into halftime, the Aggies were awarded an untimed penalty corner with no time on the clock. Junior
Stefania Swider found sophomore
Sonya Laley, who sent a sharp angle shot into the cage, giving DelVal a 3-2 lead at the break.
With 19:05 to go in the contest, sophomore
Kara Imes gave the Aggies an insurance goal when she deflected in a shot from Prichett. That goal would prove crucial as the Valiants got back within one on Fanelle's second tally of the game. She tapped in a rebound off senior Rylee McGuire's shot with 14:21 remaining. The DelVal defense locked down the Manhattanville attack the rest of the way, not allowing a chance for the equalizer.
The Aggies came up with the win, despite being outshot 14-8 and having just two penalty corners compared to the Valiants' 11. Senior
Emily Aldridge stopped five shots for the victory. Manhattanville junior Meghan Hughes took the loss.
DelVal takes another break from conference play when it hosts Cabrini College on Wednesday, October 7 (4:00 p.m.).
