Aggie Men's Soccer's Comeback Falls Short, Wilkes Wins 4-2

Box Score

DOYLESTOWN (PA) – A late comeback attempt by the Delaware Valley University men's soccer team fell short as the Aggies suffered a 4-2 loss to conference opponent Wilkes University on Saturday.

The Aggies dropped to 4-8-1 overall and they are 0-2 in the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom. The Colonels have a 4-8 record with a 1-1 conference mark.

Senior Eddie Metzger put Wilkes ahead just 1:30 in to the game when he headed in a cross by junior Michael Hasbrouck. Hasbrouck had a marker of his own with 26:21 on the clock. Junior Abdullah Albannay sent a free kick in the direction of Metzger. Metzger directed the ball over to Hasbrouck, who headed the ball into the net. With 7:34 left in the half, junior Jarret Colvin skied the ball into the left side of the box. Senior Mitchell Woodward settled the ball and sent a sharp angle lob over the goalkeeper for the Colonels' third tally.

In the second stanza, DelVal was called for a handball in the box, awarding a penalty kick to Albannay. He buried it to put Wilkes up by four with 28:14 to go. The Aggies ended the shutout with 19:10 on the clock. Junior Alec Scarano sprung senior Peter Tantillo for a breakaway. Tantillo dribbled around the goalkeeper and deposited the ball into the open net. Just 47 seconds later, the Colonels were whistled for a handball of their own, giving a penalty kick opportunity to freshman Patrick McCarthy. He converted to put DelVal within two with 18:23 remaining.

The Aggies had two more great chances with 8:09 and 2:42 to play but freshman Anthony Stefanelli came up with big saves on freshman Nick Miller and Tantillo. Stefanelli finished with those two saves in the final 25 minutes. He came on in relief of freshman Tim Gallagher, who played the first 65 minutes. Sophomore Austin Brotman stopped 10 shots for DelVal. Both teams played a hard-fought, emotional game, racking up seven yellow cards.

Delaware Valley looks to get back in the win column on Wednesday, October 14 when it hosts MAC Freedom opponent Eastern University (4:00 p.m.).
