DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Saturday was a historic day as Delaware Valley College fielded a men's tennis team for the first time in more than 50 years, but it was visiting Moravian College which came away with the 9-0 victory.
The match took place at the Doylestown Tennis Club as construction is currently underway for the Aggies' new courts on campus. The school sponsored the sport until the 1960s but announced a rebirth last summer with competition beginning this season.
Head coach
Darcy Rabenda, who is also at the helm of the new women's tennis program at Delaware Valley, saw her team take the court against an established Greyhounds' squad. In singles,
Tyler Smith,
Rafael Rangel-Lopez, Matt Hardy,
Colin Evoy and
Josh Beare took losses with Rangel-Lopez picking up a game in his match. The Aggies forfeited the number six singles spot.
Smith and Rangel-Lopez teamed up for first doubles while Hardy and Evoy were at second doubles and both lost by 8-0 scores. Delaware Valley forfeited the third doubles spot.
Delaware Valley is home next Saturday against Penn State Abington. The women will make their collegiate debut at home against Penn State Abington at the same time.
