DOYLESTOWN (PA) – The Delaware Valley College women's tennis team picked up the first points in program history, but Penn State Abington came away with the 6-4 triumph indoors at the Doylestown Tennis Club.
The Lions improved to 2-0 while the Aggies fell to 0-2.
Despite the overall loss, Delaware Valley made history with wins at first and second doubles as well as second singles. The tandem of
Jessica Oszvart and
Melanie Mayhew posted an 8-4 triumph over Honora Hegarty and Honestee Sphabmixay at the first spot. Meanwhile, the Aggies second doubles team of
Karin Gasparini and
Natalie Hoffman swept Janie Saile and Sally Phung, 8-0.
Mayhew continued her memorable day by posting the first singles win in Aggie women's tennis history. She dropped the opening set to Olya Popili in a tiebreaker (7-6 for the set, 7-4 in the tiebreaker), and was down a break in the second. She fought back and took the second set, 7-5, then outlasted Popili in the third, 10-8.
Oszart took five games at first singles, but fell to Honora Hegarty, 6-4 and 6-1. Gasparini dropped
6-0 and 6-3 sets to Sheena Philip at third singles. Hoffman forced a third set but fell to Gabrielle Eberhardt, 6-3, 2-6 and 6-2 at fourth singles. The Aggies defaulted matches at fifth and sixth singles as well as third doubles.
