Jessica Summers notched a hat trick in a six-minute span in the first half as the Aggies opened Freedom Conference play with a 3-1 home triumph over DeSales University.
Delaware Valley improved to 7-3 overall and 1-0 in the conference. It was the Aggies' fourth win in their last five games and the triumph also upped their home record to 6-1 on the year. The team has also already matched its win total from last year when they went 7-12 overall and reached the conference tournament with a 4-3 mark in league play.
It was Summers' second, three-goal performance of the season as she also accomplished the feat in a win at Neumann University on September 7. Summers upped her season totals to seven goals and 20 points (second on the team in each category) and she leads the way in game-winning tallies with three.
Summers opened the scoring with 16:12 remaining in the opening stanza as she stole the ball in the circle and went high to beat DeSales goalkeeper Becky Rasmuson. Just 1:42 later, Summers pounced on a rebound from a
Kelsey Zook shot and made it a 2-0 ballgame.
Summers then completed her hat trick with 10:53 left in the half as she position herself in front of the goal and deflected a
Leah Hawthorn shot up and into the netting.
The Bulldogs (3-5, 0-1 Freedom) put themselves back in the game three minutes later as, off a corner, Meryah Harding took a pass from Alyssa Malatesta, went into the circle and found the low left corner of the cage.
It remained a 3-1 contest as the clocked ticked near the five-minute mark in the second half. DeSales then had a golden opportunity as Allison Malatesta had a breakaway, but Delaware Valley keeper
Sandra Edwards make a pad save to maintain the two-goal lead.
Delaware Valley held a 19-12 advantage in shots and maintained a 9-8 edge in corners. Edwards finished with seven saves and the win while Rasmuson recorded eight stops for the Bulldogs.
