Box Score DOYLESTOWN (PA) – The Delaware Valley College women's soccer team wrapped up its 2013 campaign with a 2-1 home loss to Freedom Conference opponent Manhattanville College.
The Aggies closed out the season with a 4-13-2 record overall and a 1-5-1 mark in league play while the Valiants finished 5-12-3 and 2-3-2.
It was also a senior day celebration for Delaware Valley as
Julie Burnell and
Nicole Huff culminated their collegiate careers.
Manhattanville started the scoring 15-plus minutes into the game when Dani Sullivan played a through ball at midfield to a streaking Christie DeMarco, who dribbled into the box and buried a shot inside the right post. With 6:34 remaining on the first-half clock, DeMarco struck again as she got loose on another breakaway after being sprung by Sullivan. This time she went inside the left post to make it a 2-0 game at the break.
Delaware Valley came out strong in the second half and cut into the Valiants lead early. Huff played a great ball into the box and
Sam Ricks was there to fight off the keeper and play the ball to Shayna Shaeffer. Schaeffer then deposited the loose ball into the empty net for her third goal of the year with 39:08 remaining. Despite outshooting Manhattanville, 7-5, in the final half, the Aggies were unable to find the equalizer.
Burnell finished her last collegiate game with nine saves to give the graduate student (she earned her undergraduate degree in just three years and came back for her final year of athletic eligibility) 186 stops on the year and 570 for her career.
The Valiants had two keepers split time and they combined for six saves. As a team Delaware Valley managed 12 shots and three corner kicks while Manhattanville got off 16 shots and three corners.
