CHESTER (PA) – Samantha Balonis scored with 6:12 remaining to give host Widener University a 3-2, non-conference victory over Delaware Valley College.
The loss spoiled a great showing by Aggie junior
Leah Hawthorn, who notched both of her team's goals. She opened the scoring 11:10 into the contest with an unassisted tally. Then, after the Pride (2-7) had taken a 2-1 advantage, Hawthorn came back and tied it early in the second half off an assist from
Taylor Prichett. Hawthorn now has six goals on the year.
However, Balonis found the back of the cage for her first goal of the year and the game-winning tally. Olivia Burgese picked up the assist. Widener's first two goals came off the stick of Meghan Garvey, her eighth and ninth tallies of the year.
Widener had advantages of 9-8 in shots and 9-6 in corners.
Sandra Edwards recorded five saves for Delaware Valley (3-6), which will return action on Saturday, September 29 when it travels to DeSales University for its second Freedom Conference game of the year. The Aggies opened league action with a 2-1 road triumph over Misericordia University last weekend.
