TROY (NY) – Four Delaware Valley College track and field athletes competed at the ECAC Division III Championships and looked to improve their chances at reaching the NCAA Division III Championships
Senior sprinter
Travis Pitts appears to have done just that. The two-time Middle Atlantic Conference Male Track Athlete of the Year and 100-meter champion was sitting outside the top 20 nationally in the event heading into this last week of competition (the top 20 performers qualify for the NCAAs).
Pitts hit the track for Thursday's preliminaries and posted his best time of the year at 10.64 seconds. That time would put him in a tie for 13th place based on last week's list and not knowing results from other meets across the country this week. Pitts then finished in third place in the finals with a time of 10.94 seconds. Pitts not only qualified for the NCAAs last year but finished in eighth place for All-America honors.
Fellow senior and returning All-American
Tom Masterson was already in the top 20 (13th) and in a pretty secure spot to go to the NCAAs for the javelin for the third consecutive year. He did not improve his national standing at the ECACs, but did take third place with a throw of 59.22 meters. Masterson took third at the NCAA Championships a season ago.
This year's NCAA field for each event will be announced on Sunday evening,
On the women's side, senior
Meghan Donovan and sophomore
Alexis Maylor competed in the high jump and the heptathlon respectively. Each finished in fourth place at the ECAC Championships, but neither competitor improved their national outlook and both are outside the top 20.
Donovan, a 2011 indoor and outdoor All-American, she cleared the bar at 1.64 meters at the ECACs. She ends her outstanding career with the two All-America accolades, two MAC indoor championships and one outdoor crown and school records for both indoor and outdoor (5-6 or 1.68 m for both).
Maylor, who set a school and MAC record while earning MAC Female Field Athlete of the Year honors a week ago, registered 4,217 points at the ECAC Championships.
Heading into the final events of the ECACs, Delaware Valley (12 points) was tied for 25th out of 61 teams that registered a point on the men's side. The women had 10 points and were tied for 30th out of 56 squads that notched at least one point.
