CHESTER (PA) – Returning All-Americans
Meghan Donovan and
Travis Pitts notched first-place finishes as Delaware Valley College opened its outdoor season by competing at the Danny Curran Invitational at Widener University. Team scoring was not held at the event.
Donovan tied Samantha Yeats of Villanova for the top spot in the high jump as she cleared the bar at 5 feet, 5 inches. The senior is the defending Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) champion in the event and placed seventh at last year's NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships.
Pitts, the defending MAC champion and eighth-place national finisher in the 100-meter dash, blew away the 70-runner field on Saturday. He was clocked at 11.09 seconds with runner-up Shane Jones of Harcum coming in at 11.25 seconds.
A third returning All-American,
Tom Masterson, took third out of 29 competitors in the javelin with a throw of 201 feet, 3 inches. Masterson won the MAC crown last year and placed third at the NCAAs.
On the women's side, Delaware Valley had a trio of top 10 finishers besides Donovan. Senior
Rachelle Salem broke her own school record and placed fifth in the hammer throw with a toss of exactly 124 feet.
Alexis Maylor was tied for sixth in the high jump (4-11) while Alisa Jordan took ninth in the 3000-meter steeplechase (13:05.12).
