CHESTER (PA) – Devan Doyle's first goal of the season just 4:12 into overtime lifted host Widener University past regionally-ranked Delaware Valley College, 2-1, in a non-conference game.
The Aggies, who just two days ago found out they were ranked 10th in the latest Middle Atlantic Region poll, had their three-game unbeaten streak (1-0-2) snapped as they fell to 3-2-2 on the season. The Pride improved to 3-3-1.
In the extra session, Doyle took a feed from Brittany Harvis and the junior put the ball inside the left post from 10 yards out for the game-winner. Six minutes earlier in regulation, Doyle nearly gave Widener a late lead, but her point-blank shot was kicked aside by Aggie defender and former goalkeeper
Liz McQuillan.
Harvis put Widener on the scoreboard way back at the 20-minute mark with an unassisted tally. The Aggies matched it five minutes later as
Dana Gentile picked up a loosed ball and fired her ninth goal of the season. The game stayed tied until Doyle's heroics in overtime.
Widener held advantages of 30-5 in shots and 8-1 in corners. Valarie Perretti and Vanessa Hejnas combined for two saves for the Pride while
Julie Burnell stopped 11 shots for Delaware Valley.
