DOYLESTOWN (PA) –Eastern University scored two goals in a four-minute span as the Eagles thwarted an upset bid by host Delaware Valley College with a 3-1, Freedom Conference triumph.
Eastern, which won two of the last three conference championships and went deep in the NCAA Division III playoffs each time, improved its 2011 record to 7-4-2 overall and a perfect 3-0 in Freedom play. The Aggies fell to 5-5-2 overall and 1-2 in the league.
The Eagles notched the lone tally of the first half with 5:30 remaining as Kelsey Doutrich scored her seventh goal of the year off assists from Amy Thomas and goalkeeper Alysia Goodman.
Delaware Valley took charge in the early portion of the second half and tied the contest with 32:28 remaining.
Kara Fecanin sent a corner kick toward the net and
Dana Gentile fought off Goodman and deposited her 11th goal of the year.
Eastern spent the rest of the game on the attack, but Aggie goalkeeper
Julie Burnell stopped several threats. The Eagles then took the lead for good with 6:53 remaining as Ashley Graybill sent a pass into the box and Charlotte Laurie beat Burnell to ball and put the ball across the line. Eastern then added an insurance tally with 2:45 to go as Graybill hit a free kick from about 30 yards out.
The Eagles finished with advantages of 20-5 in shots and 10-1 in corners. Burnell was outstanding in defeat as the sophomore finished with 13 saves. Goodman stopped two shots in the win.
