DALLAS (PA) –
Leah Hawthorn scored with just 2:22 remaining in the second overtime to give Delaware Valley College a 2-1 triumph over host Misericordia University in a crucial Freedom Conference game.
The win was the second straight for the Aggies – both conference wins – as they improved to 9-8 overall and 3-2 in the Freedom. They are now tied with Misericordia (7-7, 3-2) for third place in the league standings and just half a game behind King's College (3-1) which is playing at Wilkes University (0-4) tonight. FDU-Florham is in fifth place and a game behind Delaware Valley and Misericordia. Two conference contests remain (Delaware Valley hosts Wilkes and nationally-ranked Eastern University) with the top four teams qualifying for the Freedom playoffs.
Wednesday's game appeared headed for penalty strokes when the Aggies were awarded a late penalty corner. Hawthorn sent the corner into play and
Mindy Miniconzi received it at the top of the circle. Miniconzi sent a pass back to Hawthorn and the freshman put the ball inside the near post for the game-winning tally. It was Hawthorn's sixth goal of the season and the second time she scored the deciding tally.
Delaware Valley opened the scoring of the game off a penalty corner as well as Miniconzi blasted home her seventh goal of the season with 65 seconds remaining in the opening half. It was just the second shot of the stanza for the Aggies and the first didn't take place until the final four minutes.
Rony Jacober was credited with the assist.
Misericordia, which outshot Delaware Valley, 7-2 in that first half, kept the pressure on in the second stanza. It recorded nine more shots in the second half, including three in a wild sequence. Aggie all-conference goalkeeper
Hollis Hancock stopped the first two attempts, but Kelly Pelcher finally put the ball into the cage with 8:40 remaining in regulation to tie it up. Both teams had chances in overtime before Hawthorn send the visiting team home with the victory.
Misericordia finished with a 21-10 advantage in shots while the corner attempts were tied at 7-7. Hancock finished with 11 saves while Grace Riker had five for the Cougars.
