AGGIES IMPROVE TO 2-0 WITH 30-17 WIN OVER KEAN

UNION (NJ) -- Matt Cook rushed for 151 yards and Charles Squitiere had a game-clinching, 90-yard interception return for a touchdown in the closing moments as Delaware Valley College notched a 30-17 victory at Kean University in a non-conference game.

The win improved the Aggies to 2-0 on the season and they will now prepare for a home battle with No. 6 Wesley next Saturday. Last year, the two teams met when Wesley was ranked third in the country and Delaware Valley pulled off a 25-22, last-second home victory. Today's contest was the season opener for Kean.

Down 17-14 after three quarters of play, Kean drove all the way down to the Aggie 2-yard line where it faced a third-and-goal situation. Jared Chunn was stopped at the 1 and the Cougars elected to kick the field goal. Billy Daniels booted it through the uprights to tie it up with 9:31 remaining in regulation.

The ensuing Kean kickoff went through the end zone for a touchback. Delaware Valley then put together a nine-play scoring drive, gaining all but 15 yards on the ground and those extra yards came on a facemask penalty at the end of a run. Cook netted 43 yards on the drive and Isaiah Hall added 19. Tyler Neal then ended the drive with a three-yard scamper into the end zone, the first score of the sophomore's career. Jake Sobchak added the extra-point to give the Aggies a 24-17 lead with 5:26 left.

On the ensuring drive, the Cougars converted on fourth-and-nine and third-and-one situations and eventually reached the Delaware Valley 20-yard line. On first down, quarterback Tom D'Ambrisi scrambled to his right and tossed a pass downfield, but Squitiere stepped in front of the receiver for the interception and returned the pick 90 yards down the left sideline for a 30-17 score with 54 seconds remaining. It was Squitiere's second career interception for a touchdown and he moved into a tie for fourth place on the school's all-time list with 12 picks.

The Aggies had a pair of golden opportunities in the first quarter, but they dropped two potential touchdown passes, including one in the end zone. The second drop led to a short field goal attempt, but a low snap forced an incomplete pass and a turnover on downs.

Delaware Valley's defense held Kean deep in its own territory and, following a punt, the offense took over at the Cougar 37. The Aggies drove to the Kean 18-yard line and Sobchak booted home a 35-yard field goal for a 3-0 advantage with 13:26 remaining in the half.

Kean traveled into Delaware Valley territory, but was forced to punt and it went into the end zone for a touchback. The Aggies moved the ball to the 31-yard line and quarterback Mike Isgro then found a wide-open Brandon Fox for a 62-yard reception down to the Cougar 7. Cook gained two yards on first down and Hall finished the drive as he went in motion from his wideout position, took the handoff and found the end zone. Sobchak added the extra-point for a 10-0 lead with 6:27 left in the first half.

Kean took over at the Aggie 37-yard line on the ensuing drive thanks to a long return and a Delaware Valley facemask penalty. The Cougars drove to the 16 and tried a 33-yard field goal attempt by Billy Daniels, but it sailed wide to the left. Neither team did much the rest of the half as the Aggies held onto their 10-point advantage.

The second half began with Kean returning the kickoff to its 45. It lost four yards on the next two plays and faced a third-and-14. However, D'Ambrisi bought some time and found a streaking a T.J. Denehy down the sidelines for a 59-yard touchdown. Daniels added the extra-point to make it 10-7 just 1:54 into the second stanza.

Delaware Valley went three and out, and a low snap on the punt forced Corey Heard to try to run, but he was stuffed at his own 18. Kean turned the short field into points as D'Ambrisi hit Alex Cade for an eight-yard touchdown. Collins added the extra-point as the Cougars took a 14-10 lead with 9:54 to go in the third.

Delaware Valley regained the lead late in the quarter as it put together a seven-play, 75-yard scoring drive. Cook did most of the damage with 34 yards on the ground while Isgro and Dan Heiland took care of the final 21 as Isgro pump faked and found the open receiver in the end zone. Sobchak's kick made it a 17-14 ballgame with 1:13 on the clock. That set the stage for the exciting fourth quarter and Squitiere's game-clinching pick.

Cook did his damage on 28 carries and, in the process, the junior moved into fourth place on the school's all-time rushing list with 2,168 yards. Isgro completed 10 of 20 passes for 133 yards and one score. On the defensive side, sophomore linebackers Chris James and Ken Fowlkes had career highs with 15 and 10 tackles respectively. Preseason All-American linebacker Kyle Gesswein added nine stops.

D'Ambrisi finished 15-for-20 for 192 yards and two touchdowns for Kean. Cade had six grabs for 74 yards and a score while Jamahl Williams led the defensive effort with 13 tackles and one interception.
