WILLIAMSPORT (PA) – The Delaware Valley College defense recorded six turnovers and five sacks as the Aggies remained in a tie for first place in the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) with a 21-7 victory at a muddy Lycoming College.
The win was the fourth straight for Delaware Valley as it improved to 6-1 overall and 4-0 in the MAC. The Aggies remain on top of the standings with Albright College (7-0, 4-0) and the two are scheduled to meet in two weeks (November 7) in Doylestown. Delaware Valley travels to King's College next Saturday while Albright hosts FDU-Florham.
Lycoming (3-4, 2-2) struck first just 1:55 into the contest as, on a third-and-seven, quarterback Colin Dwyer hit wideout Ryan Wagaman for a 58-yard touchdown. T. J. Chiarolanza added the extra-point for the 7-0 advantage.
Delaware Valley reached the Lycoming 32-yard line on the ensuing possession, but could not convert a fourth-and-three opportunity. Its second possession saw
Mike Isgro get picked off by Jim Daley and returned to the Aggie 43-yard line. The Warriors moved the ball to the 29, but
Kyle Gesswein forced a fumble on a run and
Dustyn Seifert recovered it for Delaware Valley to end the threat.
Later in the first quarter, Dwyer fumbled a snap and the Aggies'
Garrett Wooters, who a play earlier recorded a sack, recovered the loose ball at the Lycoming 24-yard line. Delaware Valley decided to go for it on fourth-and-five from the 19 and an Aggie receiver was mugged for pass interference. That put the ball at the four for a first-and-goal. A pair of
Matt Cook runs put the ball at the two and, on third-down, Isgro faked the handoff to Cook and found tight end
Vincent Lochetto for the touchdown.
Jake Sobchak added the extra-point to tie the game at 7-7 with 13:21 remaining in the half.
The Aggies had another opportunity nine minutes later as Gesswein intercepted a Dwyer pass and returned it 11 yards to the Warrior 43-yard line. Two pass interference calls on the drive moved the ball to the 18. Isgro then found a wide-open
Chris Ruiz for the freshman's first collegiate touchdown. Sobchak added the kick for a 14-7 advantage with 3:08 left in the half.
On the ensuing possession, Lycoming drove to the Aggie 10-yard line where it faced a third-and-four with under a minute remaining. Wooters bursted through the line and sacked Dwyer back at the 20. Chiarolanza attempted a 37-yard field goal, but it hit the crossbar and fell short as Delaware Valley maintained its seven-point lead at the intermission.
The Aggies took the opening kickoff of the second half and drove to the Lycoming 26-yard line, but Isgro came out of the game with an injury. A five-yard penalty moved the ball to the 31 and backup quarterback
Mark Hatty tossed a pair of incomplete passes to turn the back over to the Warriors.
Later in the quarter, Lycoming used a pair of big third-down conversions to reach the Aggie 10-yard line. However, a bad exchange between Dwyer and tailback Josh Kleinfelter resulted in a fumble, and Delaware Valley's
Chris James pounced on it at the 14 for the fourth Warrior turnover of the contest.
A short punt gave Lycoming excellent field position at the Delaware Valley 40. On first down, Dwyer went deep downfield and cornerback
Charles Squitiere tipped it up in the air and linebacker
Mike Jaskowski made a diving interception at the 14-yard line. It then became the Cook show as he netted 41 yards on five straight runs to end the third quarter. The Aggies had to punt from the Lycoming 45-yard line, but field position changed dramatically, especially when
Corey Heard's boot was downed at the two-yard line on a great play by Squitiere.
The Warriors gained 13 yards on first down, but that was it and a punt was fair caught by Squitiere at his own 49-yard line. A 17-yard scramble by Hatty gave the Aggies a first down and, two plays later, he hit
Dan Heiland for a 30-yard catch-and-run down to the Lycoming one. Cook was stopped on first down but fullback
Butch Whiteside went over the top on the next call for the touchdown. Sobchak made it 21-7 with 9:27 to go. Lycoming never threatened after that and cornerback
Troy Green added the exclamation point for the Aggies with an interception with 1:16 remaining for the sixth forced turnover of the game.
Delaware Valley allowed just 218 total yards with 58 coming on the early touchdown strike Wooters had a career day as the junior end finished with six tackles, three sacks and a fumble recovery. Jaskowski and
Derek Porter had a sack apiece with Jaskowski also adding a pick. Gesswein finished with six tackles, one forced fumble and one interception.
Isgro was 7-for-21 for 75 yards and two scores before the injury. Hatty was 2-for-9 for 50 yards and added 29 yards on two rushes. Cook finished with 86 yards on 33 carries and, in the process, moved into second place on the school's all-time rushing list (2.682 yards). Heiland had a season-high five catches for 94 yards.
Dwyer completed just 16 of 44 passes for 204 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions for the Warriors. Ryan Wagaman hauled in seven catches for 114 yards and the score. Kleinfelter netted 56 yards on 13 carries. Ted Geurds led the defensive charge with 10 tackles.
