DEFENSE DOMINATES IN 23-0 AGGIE VICTORY OVER WILKES

DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Mike Isgro tossed a pair of touchdown passes while the Delaware Valley College defense allowed just 141 yards and forced four turnovers as the No. 23 Aggies notched a 23-0, Homecoming shutout over Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) foe Wilkes University.

Delaware Valley improved to 5-1 overall and a perfect 3-0 in the MAC as it remained tied with Albright College (6-0, 3-0) for the top spot in the conference. The Colonels dropped their third straight as they fell to 3-3 overall and 0-3 in the MAC.

Wet conditions made it a game of field position, especially in the first half when the teams combined for punts on the first five possessions of the contest (three Delaware Valley, two Wilkes).

The Colonels' third possession resulted in the first turnover as Aggie linebacker Chris James picked off a Rob Johnson pass at the Wilkes 35. Tailback Matt Cook (29 yards) and Isgro (5 yards) combined to drive the ball to the one and, on second down, Isgro rolled out and hit fullback Butch Whiteside for a touchdown pass. Josh Shields added the extra point for a 7-0 Aggie advantage with 13:35 remaining in the half. It stayed a 7-0 game through the intermission as Delaware Valley had a pair of key drops by wide-open receivers deep in Wilkes territory on consecutive drives.

The Aggies were finally able to put more points on the board late in the third quarter as they took advantage of another Johnson interception. The pick was recorded by Ryan McCullough in Delaware Valley territory and the offense drove the ball to the Wilkes 10-yard line before settling for a 27-yard field goal by Shields with 1:13 remaining the quarter.

Wilkes soon followed with its best chance of the day as Joseph Chrismer forced the Aggies' Charles Squitiere to fumble a punt return and Kyle Rountree recovered it at the Delaware Valley 25-yard line on the last play of the third quarter. The Colonels managed just one yard on both first and second down, and Johnson was then sacked by Aggie linebacker Mike Jaskowski at the 30 to force fourth down. Wilkes elected to go for it, but Johnson was once again taken down, this time by linebacker Kyle Gesswein, back at the 40 and Delaware Valley took over on the downs.

The Aggies wasted no time after that as they marched 56 yards on five plays, capped by Isgro's 43-yard touchdown pass to a wide-open Brandon Fox. Shields missed the extra point and it was still a two-possession game at 16-0 with 9:55 to go.

The Delaware Valley defense came through with another turnover later in the quarter as linebacker Robert Yurko intercepted a Johnson toss and returned it to the Colonel 25. Four plays later, Isaiah Hall scampered into the end zone on an 11-yard run for a 23-0 advantage with 2:47 to go. Wilkes drove down the Aggie 29 on its last possession, but could not get closer than that as the Aggies notched their first shutout since a 31-0 blanking of Lycoming College in 2007.

Delaware Valley finished the day with 330 yard of total offense. Isgro was 11-for-19 for 121 yards and the two scores. Cook went over the 100-yard mark for the 14th time in 27 career games as the junior notched 162 yards on 33 carries.

Defensively, Jaskowski finished with a team-high eight tackles and a sack. Gesswein and Derek Porter had five tackles apiece and combined for 1.5 of the team's four sacks. Rob Eagles added the remaining interception for the unit.

Johnson completed just nine of 22 passes for 53 yards and the four interceptions. Zach Tivald was the leading rusher with 12 carries for 66 yards. Kevin Gerhart led the defensive charge with eight tackles while Ryan Clifford, James Moore and Walter Pabst had seven stops apiece. Tim Lombreglia had the Colonels' lone sack while also adding six tackles.
