DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Delaware Valley College scored a pair of first-half goals and then held on at the end as the Aggies recorded one of the biggest wins in program history with a 2-1 triumph over previously unbeaten King's College in the Freedom Conference opener for both teams.
With the win, Delaware Valley improved to 3-4-1 overall and already surpasses its entire win total from last season (2-16-1) with 10 games remaining on the schedule. Second-year head coach Brian Kammersgaard and his squad also posted their first win at home since a 3-2 triumph over Ursinus on October 22, 2003 – a span that covered 37 games in Doylestown. It was also their first conference win since a 1-0 victory at Wilkes University in the 2003 season finale. The loss dropped the Monarchs to 9-1 overall and 0-1 in the Freedom.
Delaware Valley hit the scoreboard 18:48 into the contest as Matt Weiler picked up an Eric Maciag header and deposited his first goal of the season. Twelve minutes later, James Fay stole the ball from a King's defender and sent a pass to Joe Mastrine, who one-timed it into the net for his first goal of the year and a 2-0 Aggie advantage.
Ironically, those were only two shots that Delaware Valley would have in the contest as Kammersgaard went into a defensive mode for the rest of the contest. King's fired 18 shots in the game, but most of the opportunities came from a distance.
The Monarchs did make things interesting with 4:33 to go as Paul Racz scored off an assist from Dan Carle. Then with about two minutes remaining, they had a header off a corner kick opportunity that seemed destined for one of top corners of the net. However, Aggie goalkeeper
Tristan Preece jumped and deflected the ball out of bounds for a spectacular save. Preece finished with 12 saves in the win.
