EDWARDSVILLE (PA) – Delaware Valley College junior quarterback Mike Isgro tossed three touchdowns passes and ran for a fourth score as the Aggies posted a 28-20 victory at Wilkes University and now has a chance to win a share of the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) title and a possible NCAA bid after another wild weekend in league play.
Delaware Valley, which won at Wilkes for the first time since 1991, assured itself of a .500-plus record for the sixth straight year as it improved to 6-3 overall and 4-2 in the MAC. The biggest noise in the conference took place just a few miles down the road as last-place King's College upset one the conference front-runners, Lycoming College, 24-7.
As a result, Albright College, a 21-10 winner over Widener University, is alone in first place and clinched at least a share of the MAC title with a 5-1 mark. The Aggies are tied with Lycoming College and Lebanon Valley College heading into next week's regular-season finale. Delaware Valley will host Albright while Lycoming hosts Lebanon Valley.
If Delaware Valley wins, it will claim a share of the conference title as the MAC recognizes multiple champions in case of a tie and uses its tiebreaker criteria to determine the team that gets the conference's automatic berth to the NCAA Division III playoffs. The Aggies would get that berth if Lebanon Valley defeats Lycoming as Delaware Valley would be tied with Albright and Lebanon Valley and have wins against both teams.
An Aggie win and a Lycoming victory would give the Warriors the NCAA bid thanks to their wins over Albright and Delaware Valley. An Albright win over the Aggies would give the Lions the outright title and the NCAA bid.
Wilkes (3-6, 3-3) jumped out to a 13-0, first-half lead with a pair of long scoring drives. The Colonels took the opening kickoff and went 65 yards on nine plays concluding with a four-yard touchdown run by Harry Reese. They then put together a 10-play, 79-yard drive that was capped by a 19-yard scoring toss from Rob Johnson to Gennaro Zangardi with 5:52 to go in the second quarter. The extra-point failed on the second score.
The Aggies got on the board in the closing seconds of the half. They took over on their own 48-yard line with 1:43 to go and faced a fourth-and-two at the Colonel 44. Isgro's pass was intercepted and returned into Delaware Valley, but a defensive holding penalty negated the pick and gave the Aggies an automatic first down. On the very next play, Isgro hit Joe Gionfriddo for a 34-yard touchdown pass. Shane Toohey added the extra-point to make it a 13-7 ballgame with 47 ticks remaining.
Delaware Valley took the lead for good with 2:08 left in the third quarter as a 12-play, 66-yard drive ended with a one-yard sneak into the end zone by Isgro. The signal-caller completed four of five passes for 49 yards on the drive. Toohey's kick gave the Aggies the 14-13 advantage.
Delaware Valley extended the lead to 28-13 and made it 28 unanswered points with a pair of four-quarter scores – both set up by Charles Squitiere interceptions. The first pick was at the Aggie 28-yard line and the junior cornerback returned it 53 yards to the Colonel 19. A penalty at the end of the return put the ball back to the 29. Two plays later, Isgro connected with Matt Mariano for a 26-yard scoring strike and Toohey added the extra-point with 10:26 remaining.
On the ensuing drive, Squitiere snagged a long Johnson pass to give the Delaware Valley offense the ball at its own 21-yard line. Matt Cook got the call for six straight carries and he netted 28 yards. Later in the drive, the Aggies faced a third-and-12 from the Wilkes 46 when Isgro scrambled and found a wide-open Brandon Fox for the touchdown. Fox has eight catches on the year with five resulting in touchdowns. Toohey's kick made it 28-13 with 3:35 to go.
The Colonels made things interesting as Johnson hit Sean Madden for a 20-yard touchdown and a 28-20 ballgame with 1:40 remaining. The onsides kick was recovered by Squitiere, but Wilkes did force a punt and took over at its own 20-yard line with seven seconds remaining. A quick pass for the ball at the 32 and they tried a hook-and-lateral but Delaware Valley's Zach McCann recovered a loose ball on the play to seal the win.
Isgro finished 12-for-18 for 191 yards and, in the process, became just the third quarterback in Aggie history to surpass the 5,000-yard mark (5,157) in a career. He also moved into third place on the all-time passing touchdowns list with 44.
Cook lugged the ball 32 times for 147 yards as the sophomore became the fifth player in school history to surpass the 1,000-yard mark (1,062) in a single season. Gionfriddo caught three passes for 82 yards and a score while Mariano had two grabs for 40 yards and a touchdown. Defensively, McCann led the team with 11 tackles, half a sack and a fumble recovery. Kyle Reuter added nine stops in the win.
Johnson completed 27 of 46 passes for 301 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions for Wilkes. Drew Letcavage led the defensive attack with a game-high 13 tackles.
