EDWARDSVILLE (PA) –
Michelle Cernobyl broke her own Delaware Valley College single-season record for goals but it wasn't enough as host Wilkes University notched a 4-2 victory over the Aggies in a Freedom Conference game.
The Lady Colonels, who entered the game ranked 18th in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division III poll, improved to 15-1 overall and 6-0 in the conference. Delaware Valley fell to 10-8 overall and 1-5 in the Freedom.
Wilkes got on the scoreboard just 2:45 into the contest on a goal by Lindsey Raleigh. However, Cernobyl tied the contest up with 11:31 to go in the half as she pounced on a loose ball and deposited her 22nd goal of the season. The senior topped her record of 21 tallies from a year ago. Cernobyl now has 49 points on the year, one shy of teammate Bethany Pavlik's record from the 2007 campaign.
The game went into the half tied at 1-1, but Devon McKay scored back-to-back goals in the second stanza to give the Lady Colonels the lead for good. Alyssa Koncelik upped the advantage to 4-1 before Danielle Heyne ended the scoring for Delaware Valley with 5:10 remaining.
Jackie Deschenes recorded five saves for the Aggies while Lindsey Davenport stopped four shots to pick up the win.
