NO. 14 AGGIES UPSET BY FDU, 19-14

MADISON (NJ) – FDU-Florham quarterback Bill Winters threw for 150 yards and one touchdown and also rushed for a score as the host Devils stunned No. 14 Delaware Valley College, 19-14, in a Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) game.

The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for the Aggies as they fell to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the conference. However, they remained in first place as a 27-13 victory by Wilkes over Lycoming College left five teams (Delaware Valley, Lycoming, Wilkes, Albright College and Lebanon Valley College) tied for the top spot. The Aggies travel to Lycoming next Saturday. Meanwhile, FDU-Florham's first win over Delaware Valley since 1999 put the Devils at 3-3 overall and 1-2 in the MAC.

FDU-Florham hit the scoreboard first as a short field following an Aggie punt from the end zone eventually resulted in a 47-yard field by Michael Barnard with 3:04 left in the first quarter.

It stayed that way until late in the half when Delaware Valley notched back-to-back sacks by Greg Rissinger and Kyle Gesswein and to force a fourth down with 1:26 remaining. Winters attempted a quick punt as he had done successfully all half. However, Gesswein broke through and blocked the kick and Phil Blazejewski recovered it at the Devil 26-yard line. The Aggies then struck on the first play as Mike Isgro hit Dan Heiland at the 10-yard line and the wideout spun away from a defender and reached the end zone. Shane Toohey added the extra-point for a 7-3 Delaware Valley advantage with 1:14 remaining before the intermission.

FDU-Florham regained the lead as it took the opening kickoff of the second half and drove 79 yards on 16 plays. The Devils converted on three, third-down opportunities and a fourth-down situation, and the drive was capped by Winters' four-yard touchdown pass to Rob Eck. Barnhard added the extra-point for a 10-7 advantage with 7:07 remaining in the third quarter.

The Devils padded their lead by using a nine-play, 47-yard drive that took 4:33 off the clock. Winters took care of the final four yards by powering over a pair of defenders and reaching the end zone. The extra-point was blocked by Zach McCann but FDU-Florham still had a 16-7 lead with exactly 13 minutes remaining in the contest.

A personal foul penalty on the blocked extra-point forced FDU-Florham to kick from its own 20 and Isaiah Hall returned a short kick 20 yards to put the ball at the Devil 47-yard line. After two straight incompletes, Isgro scrambled on third down and gained 25 yards to the 22. On another third down, Isgro escaped a sack and found Matt Cook for 10 yards and a first-and-goal at the nine. A pass interference call put the ball at the two and, after a loss of one by Cook, Isgro hit Adam Smith for a screen pass and a three-yard touchdown. Toohey added the kick to make it a two-point game at 16-14 with 10:03 to go.

Delaware Valley forced a punt and took over on its own 25-yard line with 7:18 remaining. However, on third down, Jason Stopper intercepted a pass to give the Devils the ball back at the Aggie 30. They drove to the five but a delay of game backed it up to the 10. The drive stalled at the seven-yard line and they had to settle for a 24-yard field goal by Barnard and a one-possession game at 19-14 with 2:29 remaining.

Adam Smith returned the ensuing kickoff 34 yards to give the Aggies life at their own 49. A pair of incomplete passes left it at third down, but Isgro escaped the grasp of a defender and found Joe Gionfriddo for an 11-yard reception and a first down at the FDU-Florham 40. Three straight incompletions left Delaware Valley facing a fourth-and-10. Isgro was then sacked by Kevin Hatcher-Puryear to turn the ball back over to the Devils.

FDU-Florham was forced to punt and the Aggies took over on their own 40-yard line with just 16 seconds and no timeouts remaining. A completion to Gionfriddo put the ball at Devil 46-yard line with 10.3 seconds to go. A Hail Mary pass fell incomplete and Delaware Valley had one last chance with seven-tenths of a second remaining. Isgro fired another Hail Marry attempt, but FDU-Florham's Mike Franchino came down with for the interception and the upset victory.

Gesswein was simply dominant on defense for Delaware Valley as he notched career highs of 17 tackles, 3.5 sacks and a blocked punt. McCann added 10 tackles as the Aggies limited FDU-Florham to just 227 yards of total offense.

Delaware Valley's offense managed just 191 yards on the afternoon. Isgro completed 13 of 35 passes for 133 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Gionfriddo led all wideouts with four grabs for 61 yards. Cook who rushed for 233 yards and four scores in the win over Lebanon Valley last week, was held to just 35 yards on 13 carries.

Winters was 19-for-28 in the air ands also added 41 yards on 27 rushing attempts. Eck caught a game-high mine passes for 75 yards and one touchdown. Defensively, Hatcher-Puryear and Vinny Russo led the way with seven tackles and one sack apiece.
