LANGHORNE, Pa. – Delaware Valley men's soccer battled Cairn University to a 2-2 draw on Tuesday night in a back-and-forth match with the Highlanders.
Both sides fired shots wide of the net in the opening minutes before Elijah Purtle scored to put the Aggies up 1-0 in the ninth minute. A few minutes later, Aiden Lane made a stop, but after Cairn was called offside, the Highlanders regained possession and evened the score with a goal by Wheeler in the 19th minute. The rest of the half remained a tight battle. Zydan Stewart had a shot on goal stopped, while Nathan Congdon had back-to-back chances stopped with five minutes remaining. Things got chippy toward the end of the half, with Amos Debah and Cairn's Carabasi each receiving yellow cards.
To start the second half, the Highlanders banked a shot off the crossbar before taking a 2-1 lead in the 51st minute. The Aggies immediately responded with a shot from Purtle before Samuel Kallefors found the back of the net to even the game again. DelVal continued to apply pressure, with shots from Karl Kowula and Purtle going wide. Lane was then tested twice and made both stops to keep the game tied. In the 75th minute, Gianlluca D'Alterio nearly gave the Aggies the lead again, but his shot hit the post. Ten minutes later, Braeden Rawlins had a shot stopped before Congdon was issued a yellow card after a foul. Kowula and Chalie Sheel each had shots in the final minutes, but neither found the back of the net as the match ended in a 2-2 draw.
Following the draw, the Aggies move to 4-1-2 overall. DelVal will travel to Morristown, N.J., on Saturday, September 26, to take on Saint Elizabeth University at 4 p.m.
