READING, Pa. – Delaware Valley women's soccer fell to Albright College, 1-0, on Monday night as Dekota Barthold made a career-high nine saves.
The Lions had the first three shots of the match, with one blocked and another sailing wide before Barthold made her first stop in the eighth minute. Alexa DelGiudice responded with a chance that was stopped a minute later. The junior had another opportunity sail wide following a corner kick. Both goalkeepers made saves around the midway point of the half as a handful of substitutions occurred. Barthold made back-to-back stops for the Aggies in the 34th minute to bring her first-half total to five. With five minutes remaining, Marissa Rogers got a shot on goal, but Kunkle stopped the attempt for Albright.
Verdone had an early shot in the second half stopped by Barthold before Gianna Grassifulli had two of her own stopped with attempts down the middle. In the 60th minute, the Lions had a shot blocked and earned a corner kick. Off the corner, the ball bounced to Houge-Pellerin, who broke the scoreless tie to put Albright ahead, 1-0.
The sides could not get a shot off for the next seven minutes before Barthold stopped a shot high to the left. Piper Jones was then called for a foul, giving the Lions a shot on goal off the ensuing free kick, but Barthold made the save.
After a short injury timeout, DelVal got the ball on a throw-in, where it found Rena Kotsedakis, who fired a shot high over the goal. The Aggies held Albright in its defensive zone for the remainder of the night but could only muster one shot, a blocked attempt from Grassfulli in the 88th minute.
With the loss, DelVal falls to 2-2 on the season. The Aggies return home on Monday, September 21, to host Immaculata at 4 p.m.
