GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. – Delaware Valley men's lacrosse kept things close with Gwynedd Mercy through the first half, but the Griffins pulled away in the second half for a 10-2 final on Wednesday night.
Daniel Hickling made the first of his six saves on Devine following the opening faceoff after an Aggies turnover. Both teams struggled with turnovers early before Galvan fired one shot high and another on goal four minutes in. Delaware Valley had a brief man-up opportunity as Luke Witko sent a shot wide before Kieran Schneider hit the post. Gwynedd Mercy called a timeout and, coming out of the break, fired a pair of shots wide before Galvan found the back of the net to give the Griffins a 1-0 lead. Gwynedd Mercy continued to pressure after the goal, forcing Hickling to make two more saves while another shot hit the crossbar before the end of the quarter.
Hickling opened the second quarter with two more saves before a caused turnover by Witko led to a shot wide from Schneider. Ryan Shelton put a shot on goal but was stopped just over five minutes into the period. Gwynedd Mercy then rattled off five quick shots, though only one was on goal, as the Aggies were pinned in their defensive zone. With 1:41 remaining in the half following a timeout, the Griffins turned the ball over and Dalton Richter capitalized with a goal off an assist from Schneider to tie the game at 1-1. Juan Zurita won the ensuing faceoff but turned the ball over, allowing Gwynedd Mercy to quickly regain the lead. Schneider got another shot off before halftime, but it sailed wide.
Hickling made three saves in the third quarter to keep the Aggies within striking distance, but Gwynedd Mercy began to pull away. Citrigno sparked a five-goal run for the Griffins during the quarter to extend their advantage.
Hickling continued to rack up saves in the fourth quarter before Ciran and Devine scored back-to-back goals, including one on a man advantage following a Shelton penalty. After Gwynedd Mercy scored its tenth goal, Schneider caused a turnover and found the back of the net for Delaware Valley's second goal, making the final score 10-2.
Following the loss, the Aggies fall to 0-6 overall. Delaware Valley will look to get in the win column on Saturday, March 21, when it hosts Marywood at 1:00 p.m.
