DOYLESTOWN, PA– Delaware Valley men's lacrosse was defeated by Marywood, 10-4, on Saturday afternoon after a silent second and third quarter.
The Aggies held off the first three shots of the game with saves from goalie
Daniel Hickling. During a man-up situation, the Pacers took advantage with their first goal. In response, Delaware Valley's defense picked up their pace forcing four missed shots and a clock violation.
Ryan Rothenberger caused a Pacers turnover, and the ground ball was recovered by
James Cadott. The sequence led to a successful clear attempt and the Aggies' first goal made by
Kieran Schneider.
Within the first minute of the second quarter, the Pacers capitalized on their 3-1 lead, putting another goal on the board. Delaware Valley struggled to get their offense flowing, only taking two shots on goal while allowing twelve for Marywood.
An Aggies defensive rhythm picked up with 5:38 left in the third quarter with two forced misses on goal and a turnover caused by
Ashton Benkwitt leading to Caddott securing the ground ball and a successful clear attempt. Failure to execute on offense left the quarter silent with only three more shots on goal as a result of their eight turnovers, permitting Marywood to continue their trend of three goals per quarter and extend their lead to nine.
After the initial Pacer goal to start the fourth quarter, the Aggies took control with a response in their next possession from
Jake Devereaux with a goal assisted by
Luca Aliano. With 5:46 remaining in the game, Aliano secured a goal of his own. In the final seconds, Schneider added on with another Aggies goal. Delaware Valley took more shots in the last quarter than they had the first three quarters combined, won control in 4-5 faceoffs, and were 5-5 on clear attempts.
Despite holding Marywood to a silent last 14 minutes of the game and Hickling's overwhelmingly higher save count of 16 to the Pacer's 6, the Aggies' slower early offense held them off from a win.
Following the loss, the Aggies fall to 0-7 overall record. The next game for the Aggies is Wednesday, April 1st when they take on Arcadia University at home.
