SCRANTON, Pa. – Delaware Valley men's soccer earned its first conference win of the season with a 3-1 decision over Marywood University on Saturday afternoon.
Zydan Stewart got the scoring started just 1:42 into the game, finding the net on the Aggies' first shot with an assist from Karl Kowula to give DelVal a 1-0 lead. The teams traded shot attempts before Forbes got one past Nick Becker in the 28th minute to even the score at 1-1. Marywood threatened again in the 40th minute, sending a shot off the crossbar. After Luke Waas had a shot blocked, Charlie Sheel scored on the rebound to regain the lead for the Aggies with three minutes remaining in the first half.
The Pacers came out of the break looking to equalize but were unable to put their early attempts on target. Roy Hevener and Stewart also had shots go wide before Nathan Congdon found the back of the net in the 63rd minute for an insurance goal, assisted by Stewart, to make it 3-1. Marywood continued to press in the 70th minute, putting three shots toward goal. One went wide, another was blocked, and Becker made the save on the third. Becker added another stop before Marywood's Forbes received a yellow card in the 75th minute. The Aggies' goalkeeper made two more saves to preserve the lead before another Pacer was shown a yellow card with seven minutes remaining. Marywood's Forbes and Marshall each recorded a late shot, but neither found the net as DelVal secured the 3-1 victory.
Following the win, the Aggies improved to 6-3-2 overall and 1-0-1 in MAC Freedom play. DelVal returns home to host Misericordia on Tuesday, Oct. 13, at 7 p.m.
