MADISON, N.J. – The Delaware Valley field hockey team took the lead twice against Drew on the road but struggled to stay on top dropping the contest 4-2 in the final minutes of play.
The Aggies were the first to strike just one minute and 38 seconds into action. Leading goal scorer
Maggie Fijal fired off the first shot of the game, stopped by the Rangers goalkeeper, but left in play. Fijal scooped up the loose ball for the second attempt shot and sunk the goal to give DelVal an early 1-0 lead.
Drew wasted no time in its retaliation, capitalizing on a penalty corner just 28 seconds later to even the score, 1-1. The Rangers went on to hold a shot advantage, 5-2, over the Aggies through the 16
th minute, unable to pull ahead.
DelVal's offense heated up in the final nine minutes of the half earning three offensive penalty corners.
Kenzie Boyd tallied three shots through the offensive spurt, sending one wide and two more right into the safety of the Rangers goalkeeper keeping the score knotted at the half.
The teams continued the back-and-forth battle in the third frame, this time with
Gracyn Shutt protecting the cage for the Aggies. An early green card on Fijal left the Aggies down a player leaving Drew in prime position to take the shot for the lead, but Shutt was up to the challenge stuffing the attempt.
DelVal swiftly changed possession in its favor with
Alex Graffius leading the charge firing off an attempt at the cage met by the Rangers' goalkeeper. Graffius drew the penalty shot attempt in the play leaving Boyd at the line for the one-on-one. Boyd converted the shot with ease to put the Aggies in the lead, 2-1.
Drew evened the score yet again just two minutes later before going on to score two more in the final frame for the 4-2 win.
Boyd led the Aggies in shots with six and shots on goal with four.
Brooke Golbeski and Shutt shared duties in the cage each playing 30 minutes.
DelVal returns to action this Saturday, Oct. 4 when they host Hood College at 4 p.m. Prior to the start of the game, the Aggies will honor their 2025 senior class.
