IMMACULATA, Pa. – The Delaware Valley women's volleyball team put up a hard-fought battle against Immaculata winning sets two and four, but ultimately unable to come out on top in the final set dropping the match 3-2.
The first set was anybody's game with neither team able to pull ahead by a margin greater than three until the Mighty Macs put together a 5-1 run to end the set with a win, 25-20.
The Aggies fell behind early in set two allowing for unanswered points from Immaculata before a kill by
Madison Alexander kicked off a 4-0 comeback to even the score. The Mighty Macs took the lead briefly back, but the Aggies' offense stood ready.
Monique Smith recorded the kill to even the score and begin a 8-1 run for the Aggies to push the team to a six-point lead, 12-6. With
Alyssa Fink on the serve, DelVal put together a 7-0 run to extend its lead to double-digits, 19-8. The Mighty Macs attempted a comeback, unable to cut the deficit down beyond five and pushing the Aggies to a final 25-17 victory off three-straight errors.
DelVal's offense slowed allowing another four-point gap early in set three. The Aggies closed the deficit down to two twice before Immaculata used a 9-2 run to create a gap too big for DelVal to overcome dropping the set 25-15.
The Aggies remained in chase through the start of set four, falling behind by as many as five, 14-9. A handful of errors on the Mighty Macs helped the Aggies crawl back to just a deficit of two twice before back-to-back kills from both
Cassandra Gloster and
Kai Logan evened the score, 18-18. Immaculata regained the lead twice more but kills from Smith and
Shanna Graham helped propel the Aggies to a 4-0 run to end the set, 25-22.
Immaculata came out strong in the final set generating an early four-point lead cut down to one by the Aggies thanks to help of a kill from Graham and service ace from
Mia Zadlo. Trailing by two, Gloster tallied three kills in a 4-1 run for DelVal to shift the lead, 9-8. The Mighty Macs finished the set on a 7-3 run to take the win, 15-12.
Smith led the Aggies offense yet again with nine total kills followed closely by Gloster with eight. Smith also added a team-high three service aces and the only block of the match.
Nia Walker led the defensive efforts for DelVal with 17 total digs. Gloster and Alexander ranked second with 10 apiece. Alexander also added 28 assists on the night.
DelVal is back on the road this weekend for the Wilkes Trimatch on Saturday, Sep. 6 facing host Wilkes at 11 a.m. followed by John Jay College at 1 p.m.
