Second-Half Push Not Enough for Men's Soccer in Loss to Mustangs

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Despite earning a second-half penalty kick that could have tied the game, Delaware Valley men's soccer fell to Stevenson University, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon.

The Mustangs opened with a pair of wide shots before Eaton slipped one past Nick Becker in the 5th minute to make it 1-0. After a foul on Samuel Kaellefors, Vitella rattled the post, but the Aggies quickly countered with Nathan Congdon forcing a stop. Stevenson doubled its lead in the 17th as Vitella converted. Roy Hevener had two looks go wide in the 29th and 39th minutes before Amos Debah was booked with a yellow card. With under a minute left in the half, Hevener put one on goal, but the Mustangs' keeper made the stop to preserve the 2-0 lead.

DelVal came out strong after halftime. Just four minutes in, Gianluca D'Alterio finished off a feed from Hevener to cut the deficit in half. D'Alterio nearly struck again seven minutes later, but his effort clanged off the post. In the 59th, Debah drew a foul in the box, but his penalty attempt missed the frame. The Aggies pressed with chances from Josh Difillipo and Karl Kowula, though both missed high, and they were unable to put another shot on target the rest of the way.

Becker kept DelVal alive with two clutch saves in the 79th off a corner and again in the 85th, but Stevenson held on for the 2-1 win.

With the loss, the Aggies drop to 8-2 overall. They open MAC Freedom play on Saturday, Oct. 4, at DeSales University.
