READING, Pa. — Delaware Valley held off Albright College on the final drive to secure a 35-28 victory on Saturday afternoon.
The Aggies got an early break when the Lions fumbled the opening kickoff, recovered by
John Dzielawa at the Albright 35.
Justin Brown picked up 10 yards on the ground before
Mike Galasso connected twice with
Alvaro Lora, the second for a 10-yard touchdown to put DelVal up 7-0. Albright answered with a 13-play drive to tie the game, then forced an Aggies punt. Roberts went back to work, hitting Bost on a 32-yard screen and then a 35-yard touchdown strike to take a 14-7 lead with 1:12 left in the first.
Early in the second quarter, DelVal reached the Lions' 3-yard line but couldn't convert on fourth down after a pair of incompletions. The defense bailed them out two plays later, when
Michael Foley sacked Roberts in the end zone, forced a fumble, and fell on it for a touchdown to tie the game at 14-14. The Aggies struck again late in the half, as Galasso hit
Gavin Migliori for 53 yards down to the one. After an unsuccessful Albright challenge, Galasso snuck it in himself for a 21-14 lead. The Lions threatened before halftime but came up empty, missing a short field goal.
Albright tied it midway through the third after a tipped interception gave them momentum. Roberts led another long drive that included three 15-yard completions and a personal foul on
Thomas Arcaroli, setting up Boston's rushing score from the 9-yard line. The Aggies responded with Brown carrying three straight times to cross midfield, then Galasso finding Jeremiah Paula to set up goal-to-go. On fourth down, Galasso hit Brown out of the backfield for a touchdown to retake the lead, 28-21.
The Lions missed another field goal from 31 yards, and DelVal made them pay. Galasso connected with Migliori on a 44-yard strike, extending the advantage to 35-21. Albright clawed back on a deliberate drive capped by Roberts' touchdown pass to Poindexter in the back corner of the end zone with 4:33 remaining.
The Lions forced a quick three-and-out and got the ball back with just over three minutes left. Boston ripped off two first-down runs to move into DelVal territory before the two-minute warning.
Jeremiah Clark broke up a pass to set up 3rd-and-9, but Roberts converted to the Aggies' 23, then again on 4th-and-1 to the 15. On the decisive play, Roberts' throw into the end zone was broken up by
Micah Bootman. The Aggies kneeled it out to secure the win.
With the victory, Delaware Valley improves to 2-1 overall and 2-0 in the MAC. The Aggies return home next Saturday, Sept. 27, for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff against Lebanon Valley College.
