CAMDEN, N.J. – The Delaware Valley women's volleyball team defeated Bryn Mawr in five sets before dropping the second match to host Rutgers-Camden in three on Saturday afternoon.

An error awarded Bryn Mawr the first point of the game, but
Kai Logan secured the quick kill in response to kick off a 6-0 run for the Aggies. DelVal maintained its lead by three points when another kill from Logan began a 9-1 run for a double-digit lead, 21-10. The Owls mounted a comeback, outscoring the Aggies 16-3 to win the set.
Monique Smith landed the kill followed by three consecutive service aces to push the Aggies ahead, 9-4, in the second set. The Aggies remained on top by at least four when the Owls used a 5-0 run to take the lead, 13-12. The teams evened the score five more times. DelVal held the 5-2 edge in the end to take the win, 25-23.
The Owls jumped out to an early 7-2 lead in set three. They went on to extend their advantage to as many as three when a service error started a 10-1 spurt for DelVal to shift the lead, 17-14. The Aggies maintained at least a three-point edge until the Owls finished things off with a 6-1 run for the win, 26-24.
The teams went back and forth to start the fourth set with Bryn Mawr eventually pulling ahead by a four-point edge, 14-10. A kill from Logan began a 7-2 response from DelVal to take the lead, 17-16. The score changed hands once more before the Aggies finished out the set on an 8-1 run for the win, 25-19.
Smith, Logan and
Madison Alexander combined for two kills and a service ace to start the Aggies on an early lead in the final set, 3-1. The Owls knotted the score at five and a back-and-forth battle ensued. The Aggies held Bryn Mawr to just four more points while putting up nine of their own for the win, 15-9.
Logan led the match with 13 kills and four blocks. Alexander was the lead assister with 29. Smith and
Nia Walker tied for most service aces with three apiece.
Samantha Wilton led the defense with 21 digs.
MATCH TWO VS. RUTGERS-CAMDEN (0-3)
Set One: 14-25
Set Two: 17-25
Set Three: 19-25
Smith, Hernandez, Wilton and Alexander led the scoring for the Aggies in the first set combining for five total kills. Alexander also contributed one service ace. A short 4-0 run marked the Aggies' biggest run of the set bringing the deficit down to seven, but Rutgers-Camden held the 6-2 edge to end the set, 25-14.
The Aggies picked up their scoring in the second set recording 10 total kills with contributions from Logan, Smith, Hernandez, Alexander,
Cassandra Gloster and
Patricia Schwab. The Aggies struggled to get a solid run going most of the set but managed to use a 4-2 spurt to cut the deficit to seven. Rutgers-Camden finished the set with a 2-1 edge to take the win, 25-17.
DelVal's offense continued to improve with 11 total kills in the final set. Hernandez, Smith, Logan and Gloster joined forces with
Shanna Graham in the attack. DelVal remained within three points early before using a 4-1 run to come within one. Rutgers-Camden pulled ahead by a margin of four, but DelVal was ready with a 5-1 response to even the score, 13-13. The teams went two-for-two to keep things even, but Rutgers-Camden finished out the set on a 10-4 run for the win, 25-19.
Smith led the offense with seven kills. Alexander tallied a team-high 16 assists. Hernandez and Walker led the defense with Hernandez leading in blocks (2) and Walker in digs (15).
DelVal returns to action this Wednesday, Sep. 17 at home when they host Cairn at 7 p.m.
