MAHWAH, N.J. – The Delaware Valley women's lacrosse team put up six goals in the final quarter but fell just short falling to Ramapo 16-12 on Wednesday night.
DelVal fired off just two shots in the first 10 minutes drawing back-to-back yellow cards on both
Charley Lengel-Kramer and
Abbie Hostetler. A turnover by the Ramapo goalie was scooped up by
Ashley Birmingham and found its way to the stick of Hostetler who set
Anna Kimbel up for the first score of the game, 1-0. Ramapo held a 4-1 scoring edge through the rest of the quarter with Lengel-Kramer converting the Aggies' second goal, 4-2.
Ramapo broke open the scoring in the second quarter with six goals holding DelVal to just two for the 10-4 lead headed into the half. Trailing by three, a yellow card on Ramapo's Leah Whitney put DelVal up a player giving
Kyra McKeegan the man-up goal thanks to the help of Birmingham. Birmingham scored the second goal of the quarter for the Aggies coming down off the draw control for the unassisted shot.
The teams went scoreless for six minutes to start the second half. Ramapo ended the drought with a four-goal run over the ensuing three minutes to take a 10-goal lead, 14-4. McKeegan ended the bleeding with the unassisted goal followed by Lengel-Kramer just a minute later to cut the deficit by two, 14-6.
The Aggies' momentum continued into the final quarter with four unanswered goals in the first six minutes. Lengel-Kramer picked up where she left off netting the seventh goal for the Aggies just two minutes in, 14-7. Birmingham followed up two minutes later collecting the ground ball off the turnover for the unassisted shot. A free position attempt at 9:51 set up
Avril Bermudez to find
Gabriella Guerra to keep the scoring streak up. A minute later Hostetler teamed up with Kimbel for the team's 10
th goal cutting Ramapo's lead down to just four, 14-10.
Ramapo put up two more goals in response, but a free position goal from Birmingham and an unassisted shot from McKeegan in the final three minutes kept the deficit to four to end the game, 16-12.
McKeegan, Birmingham and Lengel-Kramer all recorded hat tricks on the night. Birmingham also led the team in ground balls with four and draw controls with 11.
Emily Drake totaled nine saves on 25 shots faced.
