Birmingham Leads the Aggies in Tight Overtime Loss

DOYLESTOWN, Pa. – Delaware Valley women's lacrosse graduate student Ashley Birmingham led a two-goal comeback in the fourth quarter to force the game into overtime, but the Aggies came up short dropping the contest to FDU-Florham 16-15 on Saturday afternoon.
 
The Aggies jumped up to a quick 2-0 start with Anna Kimble putting up the first goal off the assist from Abbie Hostetler. Charley Lengel Kramer quickly followed up with a breakaway off the clear for the solo goal. After a scoreless five minutes, the Devils got on the board to cut DelVal's lead to just one, 2-1. The Devils tried to tie it up just a minute later, but failed to find their way past Emily Drake leaving the ball in the stick of Ashley Birmingham for the breakaway down field extending the lead to two, 3-1. The Devils responded with two unanswered goals to even the score at the end of the first quarter, 3-3.
 
The teams traded goals with Birmingham netting her second of the game to keep the game knotted at four apiece. The Devils shifted the lead in their favor, but Birmingham answered the call yet again for the tying goal, 5-5. FDU-Florham put up four uncontested goals through the remainder of the frame to take a 9-5 lead into the half.
 
Birmingham expanded on her hat trick with a goal just 36 seconds into the second half to begin an Aggies' comeback. Hostetler followed up two minutes later after a one-on-one with the Devils defense displacing the goalie for the dump into the net to bring the Aggies within two, 9-7. Back-to-back green cards gave the Aggies a two-person edge leaving Birmingham to find the stick of Samantha Charles for the teams third-consecutive goal in the quarter, 9-8. The Devils went on a two-goal run stuffed by a free-position goal from Gabriella Guerra immediately followed by an unassisted goal from Lengal-Kramer to regain the single-goal deficit, 11-10. Kimbel joined forces with Hostetler for her second of the game to keep the deficit to two, 13-11, at the end of the third quarter.
 
Trailing by four three minutes into the third quarter, Birmingham began another comeback for the Aggies scooping up the ground ball off the turnover and breaking away down field for the goal. Just eight seconds later Birmingham won the draw control bringing the ball into the Devils circle passing to Kimbel in traffic for the goal. Trailing by two, Birmingham converted two unanswered goals for the Aggies to even the score, 15-15, and send the game into overtime.
A free position attempt for the Devils made its way past Drake for the golden goal to win the game, 16-15.
 
Birmingham led the Aggies in scoring with six goals in the game. She also recorded a team-high six draw controls Drake scooped up a team-high six ground balls while also tallying 20 saves. Viola Anderson led the team in forced turnovers with three.
 
DelVal returns to action this Wednesday, Apr. 23 when they face Steven's at 4 p.m. on the road.
