DOYLESTOWN, Pa. – The Delaware Valley University baseball team drops their MAC Freedom Conference series to the #1 seeded Ducks from the Stevens Institute of Technology 6-2 and 21-9. G. Miglirori and J. Ecenroad hit solo home-runs in two different innings.
GAME 1: DVU 2 – SIT 6
Connor Esbenshade got the start on the mound for the Aggies and kept the Ducks off the board in the first inning. After opening with a strikeout, he worked around two base runners by striking out another and inducing a fly out to right field. The Ducks scored three runs in the top of the second inning off of three hits. With bases loaded, a Duck scored on a wild-pitch and two more scored on infield singles. The Ducks held an early 3-0 lead through the third inning.
The Ducks added one run in the top of the fourth inning off of a solo home-run from V. Schilleci. Esbenshade threw 3.2 innings allowing four runs on four hits while striking out four. In the bottom of the fifth inning,
Gavin Migliori swung on the first pitch and homered to left field, cutting the Ducks' lead to three runs. After a lead-off double in the top of the sixth, the Ducks quickly gave themselves an extra insurance run after a sacrifice fly to deep center field.
After another Aggie pitching change, the Ducks scored one more run in the top of the seventh inning on two hits. The Aggies finally saw a Ducks pitching change in the bottom of the seventh inning and
Jared Ecenroad hit the Aggies' second home-run of the game to left center.
GAME 2: DVU 9 – SIT 21
After an opening strikeout from starting pitcher
Derek Cannon, the Ducks wasted no time taking an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. With bases loaded, a run scored off of a sacrifice fly to right field and another scored on a failed pick-off attempt that got past the Aggie first baseman. The Aggies cut the lead in half after scoring one in the bottom of the inning after a wild-pitch scored
Blake Ramos. The Aggies tied the game in the bottom of the second inning after
Patrick Higgins singled through the left side and
Reese Hackett reached after a throwing error from the Ducks' shortstop.
Liam Martin hit a sacrifice fly to right field scoring Higgins. After a scoreless third inning, the Ducks scored 11 runs on 10 hits in the top of the fourth inning. With two outs, Martin tripled in the bottom of the inning and later scored off another Ducks' error. The Aggies still trailed by 10.
The Aggies' offense sparked in the bottom of the fifth inning when they cut the Ducks' lead to seven.
Tyler Mellinger led off with a stand-up double but advanced on the throw when he caught the Ducks' infield sleeping. Mellinger scored the first run of the inning after
Daniel Murphy singled behind him. After a strike-out, Hackett doubled down the left field line and scored Murphy. Ramos scored the third run of the inning after reaching first base because of another throwing error. The Ducks held the Aggies at three runs, holding onto their 13-6 lead.
The Ducks scored two more runs in the top of the sixth and added three more in the top of the seventh. They held the lead 18-6. After multiple defensive and offensive changes for both teams, the Aggies scored three more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Mick Brunelli saw his first plate appearance of the year and doubled up the middle for his first career hit. With two runners on,
John Dzielawa, Ramos, and
Aidan Devlin hit three back-to-back singles that each scored a run. The Aggies trailed by nine runs. The Ducks scored three more runs in the top of the ninth inning to take the third win of the series 21-9.
The Aggies' next game is Wednesday, April 23
rd at 3:30 p.m. when they face the Golden Wolves from Alvernia University.
