ROSEMONT, Pa. – The Delaware Valley men's lacrosse team fell behind early and couldn't complete the comeback despite keeping the game close, ultimately falling to Rosemont College 11-7 in their final non-conference matchup.
Daniel Hickling was tested off the opening faceoff, making an early save, but Rosemont's Jeudy found the back of the net just 1:24 into the game to put the Ravens up 1-0. The Aggies responded with shots from
Dalton Richter and
Kieran Schneider, both of which were saved. Five minutes in, after a DelVal turnover, the Ravens fired multiple shots wide before capitalizing on another turnover, as Usavage scored to extend the lead to 2-0. On the ensuing faceoff, Aston Benkwitt scooped up a ground ball, leading to a shot by
Owen Kelly, but it was turned away. Rosemont quickly countered, and after another Hickling save, Jeudy struck again with 5:34 remaining in the first quarter.
Both teams committed cross-checking penalties, and after they expired,
Ryan Lindberg put the Aggies on the board with 1:46 left in the first, assisted by Kelly.
In the second quarter,
Luke Witko fired a shot on goal that was saved, followed by a wide attempt from Schneider. The Ravens then erupted for four goals in less than two minutes, stretching their lead to 7-1. Richter halted the momentum out of a timeout, netting his first goal of the season with 5:11 left in the half, assisted by Kelly. Rosemont added another goal, but after a too-many-players penalty,
Sean Miller converted a man-up opportunity with 19 seconds remaining, making it 8-3 at halftime.
Coming out of the break, Rosemont swapped goalies. Schneider capitalized on a midfield turnover, scoring just 53 seconds into the third quarter. DelVal had back-to-back man-up opportunities but couldn't convert. However, after another cross-checking penalty on the Ravens, Schneider struck again on the man-up, assisted by Benkwitt, cutting the deficit to three with 6:36 left in the third. The Ravens responded quickly, winning the next faceoff and eventually finding the net again. Hickling kept DelVal in the game with two key saves while his team was a man down. Another too-many-players penalty on Rosemont gave the Aggies an opportunity, and they took advantage, as Schneider and Kelly scored back-to-back goals just 30 seconds apart, bringing DelVal within two at the end of the third quarter.
Hickling opened the fourth quarter with another save, but Rosemont struck twice in less than a minute to restore their four-goal cushion at 11-7. With nine minutes to go,
Ryan Rothenberger's shot sailed wide, Lindberg's attempt was saved, and Schneider was denied on a man-up opportunity. In the closing minutes, Schneider had two more shots on goal saved, and the Aggies were unable to close the gap.
With the loss, the Aggies drop to 4-5 overall. MAC Freedom action begins this Saturday, April 5, when DelVal hosts DeSales University at 1:00 p.m.
