DOYLESTOWN, Pa. – The Delaware Valley women's lacrosse team took an early single-goal lead over Kean in the first quarter, but a six-goal run for the Cougars gave them a lead they wouldn't relinquish, defeating the Aggies 19-9.
Kyra McKeegan used the man-up opportunity to her advantage finding the back of the net off the assist from
Ashley Birmingham to match the Cougars' single goal. Four minutes later
Abbie Hostetler set up McKeegan for her second of the game to put the Aggies in the lead, 2-1.
The Cougars responded with a six-goal run through the end of the first quarter and the first five minutes of the second to take a five-goal lead, 7-2. A free position attempt put Birmingham in scoring position converting the shot for the Aggies third goal of the game. The graduate student won the ensuing draw control and set up
Amelia Helkowski for her first collegiate goal, cutting the deficit to three, 7-4. Kean responded with another six-goal run to take a 13-4 lead into the half.
The teams went scoreless in the first five minutes of the second half until a foul on the Cougars gave
Katie Martin the free shot at the net making its way past the goalkeeper for the score, 13-5. The Cougars set up a play off the following draw control for a quick response to maintain their nine-goal lead. McKeegan came up with the hat trick off the free position to end the third quarter, 14-6.
Birmingham led a 2-1 run for the Aggies in the first six minutes of the final quarter cutting the deficit back down to seven, 15-8. Kean used a 3-0 spurt to gain a 10-goal lead, but Helkowski answered the call thanks to the help of Hostetler to bring the deficit back into the single-digits, 18-9. The Cougars snuck one more past
Emily Drake in the final two minutes for the 19-9 win.
McKeegan and Birmingham led the scoring for the Aggies with three goals apiece. Birmingham and Hostetler put up a team-high two assists each. Birmingham also led the team in ground balls (7), caused turnovers (4) and draw controls (6). Drake made 13 saves on 32 shots faced.
The Aggies return to action this Wednesday, Apr. 2 when they travel to Ramapo College for a 6 p.m. matchup.
