Women’s Lacrosse Defeats Gwynedd Mercy in Season-Opener at Home

DOYLESTOWN, Pa. – The Delaware Valley women's lacrosse team opened up their 2025 season in a big way defeating Gwynedd Mercy 19-9 at home.

Ashley Birmingham was the first to strike with the unassisted shot into the net to put the Aggies up 1-0 four minutes into action. Gwynedd Mercy capitalized on the woman-up advantage two minutes later to even the score. The teams traded goals over the next minute to keep things knotted, 2-2, when Abbie Hostetler started off a three-goal streak in just 30 seconds to push DelVal to a 5-2 advantage. The Griffins found the back of the net once more before the end of the first quarter to cut the deficit to two, 5-3.

The teams broke open the scoring in the second quarter going 5-for-5. Kyra McKeegan started off the scoring with back-to-back goals just 20 seconds apart for the 7-4 lead. Gwynedd Mercy answered back with three consecutive goals to make it a one-score game, 7-6, but foul trouble for the Griffins gave Charley Lengel-Kramer the opportunity to secure the woman-up goal. Gwynedd Mercy quickly netted two to even the score, 8-8, but Samantha Charles and Birmingham converted their shots to keep DelVal ahead by two, 10-8, headed into the half.

DelVal shutout the Griffins in the third quarter extending its lead by nine, 17-8. The duo of Charles and Birmingham started off the second half the way they ended the first with back-to-back goals before McKeegan went on a solo two-goal run. The spurt was finished off with a goal from Viola Anderson off the free position play.

McKeegan and Birmingham extended their scoring streaks in the fourth quarter each putting up an unassisted goal to push the Aggies to a 19-8 lead. The Griffins snuck in a final goal in the last two minutes to keep DelVal to just a 10-goal margin of victory, 19-9.

Birmingham led the Aggies in scoring with seven goals. Her second goal of the contest marked her 100th career goal. McKeegan followed closely with six goals and a team-high three assists to sit just two more away from 100 career assists. Gabriella Guerra led the Aggies in ground balls with seven while Charles dominated the draw controls with 11.

DelVal is back in action on Tuesday, Feb. 25 at Neumann with a 4 p.m. start.
