Men's Basketball Opens Season with 67-59 Loss vs Susquehanna

DOYLESTOWN, Pa. – Delaware Valley men's basketball dropped their season opener 67-59 despite multiple leads and a 35-point performance by Antonio Redding.

The River Hawks jumped out to an 8-0 lead before Kamal Johnson put the Aggies on the board three minutes in. Redding then hit back-to-back three-pointers, split by a tip-in layup by Jordan Strickland, to capture the lead. Johnson came up with a steal and was fouled, hitting both free throws. DelVal continued to push, but struggled at the line, shooting just 56%. The Hawks regained the lead midway through the first half, but Redding sank two baskets to respond. A steal by Redding set up a layup, and after securing a rebound, he connected on a three at the other end, giving DelVal its largest lead of the game at 21-14. Brendon Bradford added a three-pointer, but foul trouble began to mount. Castro Sanchez cut Susquehanna's deficit to one, and a pair of Strickland assists along with a layup by Mike Herrin sent the Aggies into halftime with a three-point lead.

In the second half, Susquehanna took a four-point lead with a three by Van Wagener, but JT Wright answered with a three of his own, and Redding sank back-to-back jumpers to retake the lead. With a pair of free throws and a layup, Wright gave DelVal a seven-point advantage. However, foul trouble again, a technical foul on Strickland, and a turnover by Redding allowed the Hawks to stretch the lead to 60-50 with 4:28 remaining. Redding responded with four consecutive free throws, but Susquehanna kept answering, taking an eight-point lead to the final buzzer.

Following the loss, DelVal falls to 0-1, while Susquehanna improves to 1-0. The Aggies travel to PSU-Abington on Wednesday, Nov. 12, for a 7:00 p.m. matchup.
