WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The Delaware Valley field hockey team controlled the majority o the offense through the start of the contest and never looked back netting three goals in the first three quarters for the 3-1 victory over King's on Wednesday afternoon.
DelVal dominated the offense at the start firing four shots through the opening 12:30. The Aggies broke through the King's defense off a penalty corner just 15 seconds later. Kaylee Hartung sent the initial shot up top to Kenzie Boyd. Boyd faced immediate pressure from the Monarchs quickly taking the reverse shot back to Hartung. Lillian Plank quickly collected Hartung's pass across to the right post for the goal to put the Aggies on top, 1-0.
10 minutes into action in the second quarter, Maggie Fijal stopped the offensive effort from the Monarchs and shifted possession back to the Aggies. Fijal found Brynne Miller just outside the circle for the give and go pass to Ava Smadi to push the defense out of place. Miller regained control and fired off a shot up top for the goal, 2-0.
King's challenged the Aggies' defense to start the second half. The Monarchs put up four total shots, two no trouble for goalkeeper Shaelynn Castanaga-Acerra and the other two blocked by a strong DelVal defensive unit. DelVal regained offensive strength in the 41st minute with its fifth corner of the game. The duo of Brynne Miller and Kenzie Boyd struck again to push the Aggies to a 3-0 lead. With just under two minutes to play in the third frame, King's stuffed the shutout attempt, 3-1.
Miller led the Aggies offensive attempts with a team-high nine shots placing six total on goal. Brooke Golbeski, Castanaga-Acerra and Gracyn Shutt shared duties in the cage making a combined three saves on four shots faced.
The Aggies are back in action this Saturday, Oct. 25 when they host Stevens at home at 6 p.m.
