HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – The Delaware Valley women's volleyball team fell to Centenary in three sets before dropping to The City College of New York in five sets on Saturday at the trimatch hosted by the Cyclones.
MATCH ONE VS. CENTENARY (0-3)
Set One: 16-25
Set Two: 10-25
Set Three: 21-25
A series of errors by the Cyclones and an early kill from
Monique Smith put the Aggies up 4-1 to start the set. Centenary mounted a 10-3 response to shift the lead, 12-7. The Aggies used a 4-1 rally to bring the deficit two, 13-11, but the Cyclones ended the set with a strong 12-5 edge for the win, 25-21.
Tied at 4-4 to start the second set, Centenary quickly took control with a 7-0 run for the lead, 11-4. The Cyclones held DelVal to just six more points in the set dominating the offense for the 25-10 win.
Trailing by four in the third set, kills from Smith and
Cassandra Gloster highlighted a 4-0 attack to even the score, 10-10. The Cyclones countered with a 10-4 run to build up a six-point lead, 20-14. A kill from
Ariana Hernandez kicked off the Aggies' attempted 7-3 comeback cutting the deficit to two, 23-21. Centenary secured the final two points to end the set with a win, 25-21.
MATCH TWO VS. THE CITY COLLEGE OF NEW YORK (2-3)

The Aggies dropped the first set 25-19 before flipping the script and claiming the second set by the same score. A kill from
Kai Logan set the tone for an early 10-2 run to put the Aggies ahead by seven, 10-3. CCNY cut the deficit to four but DelVal used a 7-2 spurt to extend its lead, 18-9. CCNY came within five, but
Ariana Hernandez secured the set point for the win, 25-19.
Momentum slowed for the Aggies in the third set netting just 11 points to give up the win to CCNY, 25-11. A service error to start the fourth set changed the tone and began a 6-1 Aggies run for the early lead. CCNY closed the gap to three, 11-8, before committing an error that started a 9-2 rally for DelVal to create a double-digit lead, 20-10. Despite holding the 6-5 edge through the rest of the set, CCNY couldn't overcome the Aggies lead falling 25-26 to send the match into a fifth set.
Logan and
Nia Walker recorded kills to start the final set and give DelVal a two-point cushion. CCNY shifted the lead by a margin of one when a kill from Hernandez combined with a pair of kills from Smith helped to put the Aggies back on top, 7-4. CCNY countered with an 8-2 run to change the lead, 12-9. Gloster answered back with back-to-back kills highlighting a 7-3 one to put DelVal ahead by a single-point, 16-15. CCNY secured the final three points to take the set, 18-16.
The Aggies are back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 22 visiting FDU-Florham on the road for a 7 p.m. matchup.
