DOYLESTOWN, Pa. – The Delaware Valley University women's volleyball team battled through three competitive sets but ultimately fell to Alvernia University, 3-0, on Thursday night.
The Aggies came out strong in the opening set, with
Kai Logan and
Monique Smith teaming up for three early blocks to give DelVal a 3-1 lead. A 10-7 run extended the advantage to 13-8, but Alvernia responded with a 17-8 surge to take the set, 25-21.
DelVal again started fast in the second set, jumping ahead 3-0. Alvernia countered with an 11-3 run to go up 11-6. The Golden Wolves maintained a five-point cushion until a kill from Smith sparked a 6-2 rally, bringing the Aggies within one at 17-16. DelVal continued to press, eventually taking a 24-22 lead thanks to a blocking error and kills from Smith and
Nia Walker. However, Alvernia closed the set with four straight points to win 26-24.
In the third set, the Aggies built a commanding 12-5 lead behind kills from Smith and Gloster, along with aces from
Alyssa Fink and
Patricia Schwab. Alvernia narrowed the gap to four before committing three consecutive errors, allowing DelVal to regain a 15-8 edge. The Golden Wolves then mounted a 12-5 comeback to tie the set at 20. Kills from Walker and Gloster pushed DelVal ahead 23-20, but Alvernia finished strong with a 7-2 run to seal the match, 27-25.
Smith led the Aggies with 11 kills and added seven block assists. Logan anchored the defense with nine block assists, while
Samantha Wilton recorded a team-high 17 digs.
Mia Zadlo contributed 11 assists.
DelVal returns to action on Saturday, October 18, traveling to Centenary for a tri-match. The Aggies will face the host Cyclones at noon, followed by a matchup with The City College of New York at 2 p.m.
