RADNOR, Pa. – After ending the first half tied, Eastern outpaced Delaware Valley football in the second as the Aggies fell 37-20 to the Eagles on Saturday.
It took Eastern just five minutes to find the end zone on the opening possession, scoring on a one-yard rush up the middle by Avrilien. Getting the ball back on their own 15-yard line, DelVal answered immediately when
Justin Brown broke out for an 85-yard touchdown on the Aggies' first play of the afternoon.
Brendan Hazell's kickoff was sent to the Eastern 12, but he had to make the stop himself after a 43-yard return. The Aggies allowed a pair of short-yardage conversions, but a sack by
Thomas Arcaroli pushed the Eagles back for a 2nd-and-18, forcing them to settle for a field goal to take a 10-7 lead.
A 13-yard rush by Brown and a 10-yard catch by
Brady Beres put DelVal back in Eastern territory, but a pair of incompletions from
Mike Galasso to
Jahaire Johnson turned the ball over on downs.
The Aggies' defense responded with a three-and-out, setting up another drive that moved methodically down the field.
Gavin Migliori hauled in passes for nine and 17 yards, and on 4th-and-12, Brown caught a 20-yard pass to set up the Aggies at the Eastern 13. A short burst by Brown paved the way for
Rob McConnell to punch it in from five yards out to retake the lead. Hazell's extra point attempt missed, keeping the score 13-10.
Eastern was able to tie the game at 13-13 as the first half expired, converting a 45-yard field goal after a horse-collar tackle penalty on
Tanner Webb extended their drive.
Out of the break, DelVal turned the ball over on downs in Eastern territory. On the ensuing drive, the Aggies committed a face mask penalty on 2nd-and-18, giving the Eagles a fresh set of downs. Eastern ran the ball six straight times up the middle, finding the end zone on the final carry to take a 20-13 lead.
The Eagles struck again early in the fourth quarter when Swinton caught a 30-yard touchdown pass over the middle. DelVal was forced into a four-and-out on its next possession, giving Eastern a short field, but the Aggies' defense held them to a field goal.
Another four-and-out by the Aggies in their own end gave Eastern the ball deep in DelVal territory, where Avrilien found the end zone from six yards out to make it 37-13 with 4:22 remaining.
Brown broke out an eight-yard gain on fourth down on the next drive before Galasso connected with
Alvaro Lora for completions of eight and 33 yards, setting the Aggies up at the Eastern 10-yard line. Brown capped the drive with another touchdown run, his second of the game, to bring the final score to 37-20.
Following the loss, Delaware Valley falls to 2-3 overall and 2-2 in MAC Freedom play. The Aggies look ahead to face FDU-Florham in Madison, N.J., next Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
