DOYLESTOWN, Pa. – Despite goals from seniors
Jess Williamson and
Gillian Baker, Delaware Valley women's soccer fell short in a 3-2 defeat against Eastern University on Saturday afternoon.
In the opening minutes,
Meztly Garcia set up Baker for a scoring opportunity, but Baker's shot went wide. Eastern University struck first in the sixth minute when Nicole Eveland's pass found Ashlynn Keys, who scored past DelVal goalkeeper
Viola Anderson. The Eagles extended their lead with 16 minutes remaining in the first half, as Emma Bennett delivered a pass to Billinda Leisner, who finished behind a defender to make it 2-0.
Faith Leake took over goalkeeping duties for the Eagles in the second half, and she was tested early. Garcia challenged Leake with a shot that required a save, and
Olivia Ball forced another stop from the goalkeeper. The Eagles then increased their lead to 3-0 after a foul on Williamson led to a goal by Emma Bennett.
Delaware Valley responded in the 63rd minute when Baker delivered a corner kick that found Williamson, who headed the ball into the top right corner of the net. The Aggies, who outshot Eastern 8-2 in the second half, saw Baker score again off another corner kick, giving them a chance to equalize. Despite several more opportunities, including a notable attempt by Williamson, DelVal was unable to complete the comeback.
