Women's Soccer Secures First Win Over Cairn 3-1

DOYLESTOWN, Pa. – Delaware Valley women's soccer secured their first win of the 2024 season with a 3-1 victory over Cairn University on Wednesday night.

Just over a minute into the match, Jess Williamson put the Aggies ahead by dribbling past a defender and scoring her second of the season. Olivia Ball later had a chance to extend the lead but fired her shot over the crossbar. In the 12th minute, Williamson assisted Gill Baker, who scored on a breakaway to make it 2-0.

Nicole Shisler came in for DelVal, replacing starter Viola Anderson, who did not face a shot. In the 27th minute, Caitlin Martinez took a shot off a corner kick, but the Highlander goalkeeper made a diving save.
Shisler was tested in the 56th minute, making a crucial save with an outstretched hand to maintain the lead. A yellow card was issued to Cairn's Abby Mellinger in the 61st minute for fouling Meztley Garcia. Jenelle Frye then entered the game as the third goalkeeper for the Aggies, with Shisler having made three saves in her 42 minutes on the field.

In the 68th minute, Alexa DelGiudice scored her first career goal with an assist from Williamson, increasing the Aggies' lead to 3-0. Baker received a yellow card in the 77th minute; she led DelVal in yellow cards last season with two. Seven minutes later, Cairn's Cameron Cook scored, breaking the Aggies' shutout. Martinez also received a yellow card with four minutes left.

Following the win on Robert A. Lipinski Field, the Aggies improved to 1-3 on the season, while the Highlanders fell to 0-2-1. Delaware Valley will next face Lycoming on Saturday, September 14.
