Last-Minute Goal Stuffs Widener’s Shutout Attempt, Aggies Fall 3-1

CHESTER, Pa. – The Delaware Valley field hockey team was put to the test defensively fending off 20 shot attempts while allowing just three goals from Widener. The Aggies flipped the script in the final minute with a goal of their own to prevent the shutout, ultimately dropping the contest 3-1 on Thursday night.

Widener controlled the first half outshooting the Aggies 11-0. Alyssa Rudd faced a challenge in the cage with five shots landing on goal. The fifth-year goalie saved four out of the five, but the Pride managed to sneak one by in the 22nd minute.

DelVal's offense came out rejuvenated in the second half controlling the ball through the majority of the first five minutes but struggled to break through into the circle. The Pride managed to break away down field to the Aggies' goal cage just once in that period pulling Rudd off the goal line to control the scuffle out front of the net and set DelVal up for the clear.

Widener shifted possession after the opening five minutes of the third quarter bringing the ball down in the 35th minute for the 2-0 advantage.  The Aggies' defense went on to fend off two more attempts from the Pride in the final nine minutes of the quarter.

The Pride tallied three penalty corners in two minutes ripping off shots both wide and saved paired with a beautiful clear from Birmingham who intercepted the shot, controlled the ball and brought it up the left side. Widener secured its third goal with just over a minute left in the game with a reverse chip from the top left of the circle over to the top right of the cage just out of reach of a diving Rudd.

DelVal finally clapped back and stuffed the shutout attempt with under a minute remaining on the clock. Brimingham collected the ball at midfield and found an open Kaylee Hartung just outside the circle. Hartung quickly released it to Alex Graffius just out front of the goalie on the right post for the shot into the back left of the cage to cut the final deficit to two, 3-1.

The Aggies will take a six-day hiatus before returning to action at home against Immaculata on Wednesday, Sep. 11 at 4 p.m.
