DOYLESTOWN, Pa. – After a slow first half for both teams, the Immaculata Mighty Macs held a single-goal advantage with just under two minutes in play. The Delaware Valley field hockey team got aggressive pulling the goalie for a extra field player to put the defense to the test. DelVal managed to fend off two scoring attempts from Immaculata to keep the score to 1-0 to end the game.
Offense on both sides of the ball struggled in the first 15 minutes with neither team able to get off a shot despite penalty corners on both sides. Delaware Valley's offense regrouped in the second frame with
Paige Sammons getting off four of the Aggies' seven shot attempts.
The Aggies saw their closest attempts around the 35
th minute of play.
Ashley Birmingham came down the right side and passed to
Alex Graffius at the goal line. Graffius led a defender with her across the line drawing the goalie to the right post just in time to send the ball out to the left post where
Kaylee Hudson went just wide with the deflection.
Two minutes later Delval saw back-to-back corner attempts with Birmingham on the insert up to
Kenzie Boyd. Boyd passed it back off to Birmingham for the shot blocked and the foul to earn a second corner.
Olivia Rexrode was on the insert sending the ball back up to Boyd and into the circle to Birmingham who fouled to put the Mighty Macs back in possession. With just three minutes remaining, a shot from Immaculata caused a scuffle out front of the Aggies net with
Lillian Plank and
Alyssa Rudd joining forces to defend the cage. Immaculata snuck one by to break the scoring drought and take a single-goal advantage.
DelVal came close to evening the score once again in the fourth quarter off a penalty corner with 9:13 left on the clock. Rexrode inserted the ball up to Birmingham who took one step into the circle before firing off a rocket shot blocked by the Immaculate defense.
Eager to send the game into overtime, DelVal head coach
Stefania Swider boldly pulled the goalie for an extra field player with just under two minutes left on the clock. Immaculata earned a corner attempt leaving the DelVal goal cage without a goal keeper. The Mighty Macs found the back of the cage, but a foul canceled the goal. Immaculata continued to test the Aggies' defense ripping off two more shots both blocked by Birmingham to prevent the score and shifting possession in favor of the Aggies for the final 40 seconds of the game.
DelVal returns to action this Saturday, Sep. 14 at home against Moravian at 6 p.m.
