OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Despite an early goal by Sydney Dispoto, the Delaware Valley women's soccer team fell to Stevenson University 3-1, as the Mustangs scored three consecutive goals.
The Aggies put early pressure on the Mustangs, outshooting them 4-2 in the first 10 minutes. A well-executed passing play led to Meztly Garcia setting up Dispoto for a goal in the 11th minute, giving DelVal a 1-0 lead. The Mustangs' initial equalizer by Madison Simard was called back with 15 minutes remaining in the first half. However, just three minutes later, Stevenson scored again, this time successfully, to tie the game 1-1. At halftime, the shot count was tied 7-7, but Stevenson led 4-1 in shots on goal.
Early in the second half, the Aggies had a chance when Williamson's shot went wide right. Stevenson then tested goalkeeper Viola Anderson, who made a save, and another shot soon sailed over the goal. Anderson saved a shot by Kayla Gerbes, but the rebound was collected by Kelly Schultz, who scored in the 64th minute to give the Mustangs a 2-1 lead. As the Aggies struggled to regain control, Ericka Kitzinger added an insurance goal for Stevenson at 72:05, making it 3-1. Anderson made a diving save to prevent another goal, finishing the game with 11 saves.
Following this loss, the DelVal women's soccer team drops to 0-2 for the 2024 season. The Aggies will return to action at home on Saturday, Sept. 7, at 1:00 p.m., when they host the Eastern University Eagles.
