Aggies Sweep at Bryn Athyn Trimatch

BRYN ATHYN, Pa. – The Delaware Valley women's volleyball team bounced back from a five-game rut in convincing fashion at the Bryn Athyn Trimatch defeating Rutgers Newark 3-1 before facing the hosts for a 3-0 victory.
 
MATCH ONE VS. RUTGERS NEWARK (3-1)
DelVal capitalized on kills from Grace Kane and Gretta Schneider to start off a 6-1 run for an early lead over Rutgers. The Scarlett Raiders wouldn't get closer than two before a huge 12-2 run from the Aggies for the 20-8 lead. The run was headed by Emma Helverson and Madison Alexander with five kills total. The teams traded points back and forth with DelVal holding a small edge to take the set 25-12.
 
The teams remained even tying the score at 7-7 before the Scarlett Raider saw their first run of the game putting up five unanswered points for the 12-7 lead. DelVal struggled to get a scoring run going only getting up three consecutive to cut the deficit down to four, 16-12. Rutgers held DelVal to just two more points while ending on a 5-0 run to secure the set, 25-14.
 
The Aggies used a series of small scoring runs to build up a six-point lead in the third set, 16-10. The Scarlett Raiders cut the deficit to three but kills from Schneider and Victoria Tucker helped the Aggies maintain a five-point advantage, 20-15. DelVal held the 5-3 edge through the rest of the set with a kill from Helverson awarding the Aggies the winning point, 25-18.
 
Zariah Prescott, Schneider, Kane and Helverson combined for seven total kills to start the final set and put DelVal ahead 8-2. The Aggies managed to maintain a lead of at least six before the trio of Prescott, Schneider and Tucker went back to work for the 4-0 run to create a nine-point gap, 16-7. DelVal held the Scarlett Raider to just eight more points while putting up nine for the win, 25-15.
 
MATCH TWO VS. BRYN ATHYN (3-0)
Madison Alexander started the game strong with a service ace to put the Aggies on the board first. The Lions answered with a single point before DelVal started on a 13-2 run led by Kane with three kills for the 11-point lead, 14-3. The Aggies held Bryn Athyn to just six points through the rest of the set while putting up 11 points from five kills for the win, 25-9.
 
DelVal pulled ahead by 10 holding the Lions to just three points to start the second set. Bryn Athyn then mounted a small comeback with an 8-5 run to cut the deficit down to just seven, 18-11. A kill from Helverson put the Aggies back on track starting off a final 7-4 scoring run for the win, 25-15.
 
The Aggies saw their first deficit of the match to start the final set giving up an early two points to the Lions. DelVal managed to even the score twice before Bryn Athyn capitalized on a 5-0 scoring run to create a five-point gap for the Aggies, 12-7. DelVal remained in chase using a 7-2 spurt to even the score at 14. Helverson followed up with back-to-back service aces to help the Aggies gain their first lead over the Lions, 17-14. The Aggies held the narrow single-point edge over Bryn Athyn through the remainder of the set for the 25-21 win.
 
DelVal returns to action this week at home in James Work Gymnasium on Tuesday, Oct. 1 taking on MAC Freedom foes King's College at 7 p.m.
