DOYLESTOWN, Pa. – The Delaware Valley women's volleyball team held a 2-1 advantage over King's heading into the final set recovering from a five-point deficit twice to ultimately win the set and the match against King's College.
The victory marks the first conference win for the Aggies this season. Their record now sits at 1-1 in MAC Freedom play.
Two early kills from
Zariah Prescott and
Gretta Schneider combined with a series of errors from the Monarchs to give DelVal an early four-point advantage in the first set. The Aggies used a 10-4 run to extend the advantage to nine, 17-8. Ahead by 10 points, DelVal gave up five more points to the Monarchs before finishing things off thanks to a service ace from
Victoria Tucker for the 25-15 win.
Once again, the Aggies struck first and continued to maintain the edge over King's using four consecutive kills from the trio of
Grace Kane, Prescott and Tucker to gain a six-point lead, 12-6. The Monarchs mounted a comeback shifting the lead in their favor, 14-12. DelVal's offense quickly put together an 8-1 response to regain a now five-point lead over the Monarchs, 20-15.
Emma Helverson, Kane and Schneider put together the Aggies final five points for the 25-21 set win.
The King's offense came out strong in the third set with a quick four-point lead over the Aggies. Prescott, Schneider, Helverson and
Madison Alexander answered the call tying the game at 4-4. DelVal tied the score four more times before being able to take a small two-point lead, 12-10. The lead changed four times with the Monarchs using a 3-0 push to end the set, 25-22.
DelVal started things off trailing by four points in the final set. The Aggies tried to close the gap but couldn't get closer than two before a 5-2 run in favor of King's created a five-point deficit. Kane and Samantha Wilson combined to bring the Monarch's lead back down to two, 16-14. DelVal remained close chipping away at the lead little by little until finally breaking through off a kill from Tucker to kick off a 6-0 run to take the lead, 22-19. The Monarchs evened things up at 23 apiece, but the Aggies came out on top with the 25-23 win.
Kane, Helverson and Prescott each recorded 13 kills in the contest. Alexander led the Aggies in assists with 27.
Grace Wilson led the defensive efforts with 26 digs.
DelVal returns to action this Thursday, Oct. 3 at Cairn at 7 p.m.
